Excited to be doing an event with Joanna Pocock in October to launch Into Being and to celebrate the publication of Greyhound-the kind of memoir I love - straight talking, educational, informed, transformative in surprising ways. We are going to have a lot to talk about. Details of event to follow.

The perfect purchase from my local bookshop @gloucesterroadbks.bsky.social on a beautiful summer morning. This is going to be my summer reading. What book have you bought from an independent bookshop this week? #independentbookshopweek

And then the postman came and he rang on the doorbell, and the dog went nuts, and he delivered a parcel, and there were two books inside with my name on them. It’s nice to hold book number 3 in my hands. I feel quite emotional ❤️

Very blessed to have such amazing readers for my forthcoming book on how to write memoir. Thank you so much Amy and Melissa

Children of the Cult, the powerful documentary directed by @maroesja.bsky.social and Alice McShane, has been nominated for a BAFTA! So many years to get this film off the ground - the stories of exceptionally brave women and men who grew up in the #osho Rajneesh communes, sexual abuse and neglect

Today I am prepping for a new course I am teaching. It’s intensive, on memoir. I am quoting from this book, as I often do when teaching, and it is falling apart! It’s a first edition, 1976, and my mother gave it to me. It is full of her annotations, so as I read it I read a little bit of her as well

My next book, INTO BEING: will be published by MUP in October and I can now share the cover - it is part memoir, part teaching manual for those of you who love writing. It is one of the only books in the UK to focus on the craft of #memoir. Pre-order manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526179258/

I am on the final stretch of writing and editing Into Being: The radical craft of memoir and its power to transform, and I can’t quite believe it. A book that evolved from a doctorate, and then a Tweet, and ten years of teaching memoir. It will be published in Oct; you can preorder it from March.

It’s good to see my cheeky face centre stage at Charing Cross Waterstones nearly three years after Sins of My Father was first published. So much stock passes through bookshops and I am very grateful this little tyke has stuck around. #amwriting #writingcommunity

Some of the memoirs I read in 2024. All are brilliant but astonishingly different, which is why I love this literary form so much. Memoir by its nature defies categorisation. They are all real life stories but writers have distinctly personal ways of telling them, because no one person is the same.

The first biography my mum wrote. A fascinating story of the power of true love and of creativity, and of living an unconventional life dedicated to self education. I also learned a lot about my mother. The life of the biographer through their subject. A beautiful book @janedunnauthor.bsky.social

This is definitely one of the best movies I’ve watched this year. Loved its ease and grittiness and how real it felt. Timothée Chalamet is brilliant in it, and he can sing! #filmrecommendation

Loved this #film. So quiet and potent, and so subtle in its exploration of generations of shame and repression, and such
melancholic beauty. It’s about grief, and how the loss of a formative relationship continues to live powerfully in those who are left. Go see it!

Loving this book. I was given it by my editor some time ago and have only just got round to reading. It’s inspiring and important for those women, like me, who have made sacrifices for our individual happiness and creativity. Sometimes it’s not selfish but necessary #lifewriting #amwriting
