In that era too, consumers organized, using their buying power to affect politics. ...."To live means to buy, to buy means to have power, to have power means to have responsibility.”After the Civil War, an economic boom in the North combined with the loss of young men in the war to make education more accessible to young white women. By 1870, girls made up the majority of high school graduates. ...Social problems and the means of addressing...mid-1880s, those women began ... using their talents... to repair the nation’s social fabric that had been torn by urbanization and industrialization... the idea of a nation divided by haves and have-nots. ... dedicated themselves to filing down the sharp edges of industrialization, with its tenement housing, low wages, long hours, child labor, and disease, along with polluted air and water and unregulated food....In the midterm election of 1890, politicians recognized the power of women to swing the vote for or against a political party. The Trump administration's Department of Education has proposed a change in policy that excludes nursing from the definition of “professional degree” programs. This reclassification does not say nursing is not a profession, but it limits access for nursing graduate students to federal loan programs and loan forgiveness used by other professional degrees like law or medicine. The proposed rule caps loans for nursing graduate students at about $20,000 per year, compared to $50,000 for other professional degrees.

Heather Cox Richardson 11/17/25 DISCHARGE PETITION TO OVERTURN TRUMP'S EXECUTIVE ORDER ON FEDERAL UNIONS, HAS THE VOTES Today Representative Jared Golden (D-ME) announced that a bipartisan bill to repeal Trump's executive order stripping the union rights from federal workers now has enough votes on a discharge petition to bring it before the House. Golden and Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) introduced the bill in April, but Johnson refused to bring it up. In June, Golden launched a discharge petition to force it to the floor. Democrats and three Republicans signed the petition, but it was still two votes short of adoption. Today, Republican lawmakers Nick LaLota and Mike Lawler of New York signed it, bringing the number of sighatures on the petition to 218. Enough Republican members have joined with the Democrats to override Johnson and challenge Trump's executive order.
