I recently read a book about the Children’s Blizzard of 1888 and it was exactly that. An unexpectedly nice day lured people out to be consumed by a brutal storm. Plus weather forecasting was in its infancy and cross country communication was done via telegraph.

This is such a good point. Understanding why is what allows for critique and innovation and that’s a fundamentally human ability.

I’ve always thought it’s more like radium or thalidomide. Very exciting and flashy at first, terrible impact not widely apparent until damage is done, still has a place but in much more controlled circumstances.

Ah, but our administrators have plans! Replace highly trained archival processing departments with low quality digitization mills and let AI do all the processing! Can AI do it better? Absolutely not! But they don’t value our labor or expertise so it’s easy to do away with.
