Born #OTD in 1887, comic actor Eric Blore is a familiar face to fans of screwball comedies. With his distinctive delivery, he was the perfect foil for Leslie Howard as harried valet Digges to Howard’s high-maintenance stage actor Basil Underwood in It’s Love I’m After (1937).

I would recommend that people watch the wartime movie, The Pimpernel Smith, with Leslie Howard.

Wednesday Evening Noir: Of Human Bondage (1934)

Going with some early noir/proto noir. It is yet another of these early noirish films that star Bette Davis; top bill goes to Leslie Howard.

Renowned painter and set decorator John Armstrong designed the costumes for 1934’s The Scarlet Pimpernel. Memorable for its humor and its commentary on war, humanity, and love, the film’s elaborate costumes are notable as well.

Veteran of one war, casualty of another

Second Lieutenant Leslie Howard Stainer served in the British Cavalry in WWI.

On June 1, 1943, his plane was shot down over the Bay of Biscay as he was returning home from working on behalf of the WWII effort. #ArmisticeDay

Percy Blakeney sailed so that Bruce Wayne could fly

(I adore the Leslie Howard/Merle Oberon version 💕)
Of course I had to watch The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934) today.

Fun trivia: Stan Lee called The Scarlet Pimpernel "the first character who could be called a superhero."

Leslie Howard was such a good Percy/Pimpernel. For me, no one else quite measured up.

Playwright and screenwriter John L. Balderston started out as a journalist and war correspondent during WWI.

In 1926, he wrote the play Berkeley Square, an adaptation of Henry James’ novel A Sense of the Past. Leslie Howard starred in Berkeley Square on stage and later in the film version. #BOTD

Rosamund John worked with Leslie Howard on three films.
“Howard taught me everything I knew about film-making,” she said. “He made me realise that the only thing that matters when you are filming is what you are thinking and feeling, because it will show in your eyes.” #BOTD
