Starfleet Academy's main contention seems to be that we can lose what we were but ultimately get it back and it's never too late to reclaim the good about ourselves and rebuild.
Which is, frankly, the most hopeful message you could put out there in the modern dystopia.

It's actually a loving and emotional finale, the writers clearly love these characters and didn't want to say goodbye.
Some people are unhappy but I think this is probably the best they could do with the unwieldy behemoth they'd created and a cast that's almost retirement age.

It's not that Australia's gun laws have been weakened the last decade or so, it's that police have absolutely refused to enforce those laws and have allows guns to proliferate. We've been warning a mass shooting was inevitable unless the police crack down on gun ownership and enforce our laws.
