you’d think being a nerd every waking hour would make me knowledgeable…
Good thread :)

Not having played it myself it’s nice to see something about the game that isn’t just people saying “starfield bad” over and over again

aren’t allowed to supplement that with other information about the algorithm. On wikipedia (which is your example so it should be a reasonable thing to measure against), when I see worst or best case there’s almost always a description of when that happens

Sure if the only thing you know is the complexity then that’s valid, but any good resource that provides time complexity (especially the extreme best and worst) should provide information on when that is. I think it’s disingenuous to act like people who argue for the value of best case complexity

because they are constructed to make it likely. Obviously what you care about is the average complexity, especially for your actual data, but best case complexity is a useful reasoning tool to understand *why* that’s the case

Let me be clear, I don’t think it’s useful in general, I think it’s a useful reasoning tool for understanding the upper bound on performance, and in analyzing the performance of algorithms that are constructed to be on average best case. I often think of hash maps as being constant time to access,

it’s useful to get your head around what’s going on

I was going to try and provide some examples where I think it’s useful to have (mostly associative arrays), but the pages I looked at only have average and worst case complexity lol

I do think that in general it’s not super useful though, maybe only if you are first learning about an algorithm and

can conclude I’m an objectively better person, if we ignore all the issues with using IQ for anything meaningful and in particular with comparing scores directly, and why wouldn’t we ignore those problems
November 16, 2025 at 10:22 AM
I was writing a whole response to this about how the numerical absolute score and the percentile I’d been told didn’t match but apparently I just have really bad estimation abilities for normal distributions *and* got my entry into calculators wrong multiple times oops

Also I got 136, so I think we

I’m somewhat dubious of the usefulness (especially of the absolute score) but it’s plausible to me that this can indicative

I also had to take an IQ test for an ADHD assessment and the idea is that they can measure your difference in score for the tasks that require longer focus versus those that don’t to figure out if you issues focusing

this looks sick :)

I do wonder how this would look if you normalised the red channel at room temperature and then took photos of something that is especially hot / cold

the worst part now that I think about it is that I literally only opened by accident, I legitimately had my mouse slip minorly while trying to click somewhere else. And I (stupidly) thought "oh it won't be too bad, let me check up on the people who are still on there"

stupid, stupid, stupid

They are so obsessed with him its insane. I'm also sure for at least some of them they do it to avoid thinking about Ada Lovelace and Grace Hopper
