An across-government technical assessment published today recognises that "nature is the foundation of national security" and that "every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse". A rational response to this would be to get very serious about nature recovery.

1/2 Curlew – wonderfully charismatic, desperately threatened and in need of urgent action if they are to remain part of our landscape. That’s why the launch of the UK Curlew Species Action Plan yesterday in the House of Lords is so important. #Ornithology #Curlew

🎣 New post-Brexit stocktake

Has the Fisheries Act 2020 become a "flagship" for sustainability as intended, or a discretionary tool that lets ministers ignore scientific advice?

Five years after Brexit, structural gaps are emerging in how the UK manages its seas.

UK fisheries policy five years after Brexit
Our latest post-Brexit stocktake examines the shift from the EU’s Common Fisheries Policy to the UK’s domestic framework established by the Fisheries Act 2020. While the new legislation provides a coherent enabling framework, its operation has been uneven and characterised by significant implementation gaps. Here, we explore how the discretionary nature of new sustainability duties and the slow delivery of Fisheries Management Plans are undermining the UK’s marine ambitions and outline the urgent steps needed to strengthen legal accountability, standardise monitoring and establish the UK as a credible, scientifically grounded coastal state.
