I also think folks - journalists and staffers alike - have learned that they simply can’t be confident that anything the President says will hold. It’s hard to know when you can believe what he says publicly let alone privately.

How would we know if it is widespread or not? Isn’t that the problem - that is could already be widespread and undermining results, but we wouldn’t be able to detect it (yet?)?
