It's quite common among Chinese who deal with foreigners to adopt an English given name. (Or at least it was 20 years ago.) Whether that was because English was higher status or because it was just practical I don't know. But I never liked it. Be Chinese and be proud, I thought.

I have to say I'm really sick of the entire world turning into Anglo-Saxon monoculture. That grates on me in a major way.
Would I contribute to that by changing my name? No fucking way.
If you do it because it's practical I don't feel it's any of my business, but to do it myself I find abhorrent.

Nobody ever showed up to claim the room, so it must have been ours.
The Chinese at that point were not very used to foreigners.

hung up. Clearly they couldn’t take any more.
Months later we show up, and the receptionist completely fails to find my wife’s name in her big book of reservations. We bend over the counter and spot a reservation for “Spimb”. It’s close enough to “Stine” that we convince them to give us that room

Brussels airport is quite good at this. Oslo is not terrible, but has yet to discover Norwegian-style beer.

How can you call it separation of powers when the executive can override the judiciary any time it likes at the stroke of a pen?
Completely absurd system.

Yeah, music-focused events is completely different. The wrong kind of event, or at the wrong time, might drive me away from the pub, but I'm not going to complain that they put it on.
One thing that was pure bliss about the Bamberg trip was the total absence of music in the pubs. Not one played it.

Thank god for drinking places without music. I love music, but I find it hardly ever adds to the experience, and in practice very often is a real pain.

Kvikk Lunsj is owned by Mondelez, which still does business in Russia. Fuck everything about them.

It’s not clear whether these were ever used as yeast rings. The wooden chain suggests the interest might be merely the shape. The use as yeast rings may have come later. Or it may be the original use, and perhaps they were included in these cabinets for the shape. Nobody knows as yet.

Yeah. They used to share one of their languages, too. It’s not like it’s a big mystery, but a fun thing to discover.

I’m with the bar guide: it does look like partially a German language-sphere thing.

I haven’t seen the central corridor with rooms on each side in other Prague pubs, but the paneling is an extremely striking similarity.
