In college in the late 90s, I sewed an upside-down U.S. flag on my backpack, probably in response to things like CA’s Prop 187 (1994) and 209 (1996). A vet on the sidewalk one day chastised me for it. My dad is a vet and I said, “there’s nothing more American than protest!”
