Want to make maps like this? I just made edited heightmaps and Gaea 3D files for Tamriel available here: www.patreon.com/posts/files-...
To make this specific map, I cropped in on the Iliac Bay and tweaked the heightmap and map scale, then used height-based masks for colors.

The Direnni Hegemony and its neighboring states, circa 1E 400. Names are mostly made up for vibes, though I did reference ESO when it made sense to do so.
Created with Gaea and Inkscape, with a little bit of color correction in Krita.

A Better Map of the Great War, based on notes from Kurt Kuhlmann, author of the TES5 book on the topic. The first two years are entirely from sketches he provided, and the last three incorporate his info and critiques.

Brainstorm with me: draw on this map the path(s) do YOU think the Velothi took from Summerset to Morrowind.

I don't know why it's taken me so long to start messing with Gaea but this thing is so much fun

Scanned these in for a chat on the TIL discord so thought I'd share them here too. Pages from the Morrowind art book, showing off early versions of the game. The tiny screenshots at the bottom are from a vertical slice of Gnisis, while the others were just set up as individual shots iirc.

I don't know about any other loading screens, but many of these artifacts were already there in the original version of the artwork. In the load screen version you can see where it was sloppily expanded.
This is definitely clone stamp/content aware fill/quick photobashing for speed.

During the Apostolic (c.1E 340-390) and Catholic (c.1E 390-500) Periods, it was customary for High Prelates of the Alessian Order to tattoo themselves with elaborate "maps" of their divine holdings. As the power of the Order grew, these maps came to encompass the majority of their bodies.

Did you know that Elder Scrolls Online was originally going to look like this? You can still see some of this more WoW aesthetic in the earlier zones and armors, but Skyrim came along, did extremely well, and the art style pivoted.

"Having two provinces allows for more visual variety"
There is more than enough visual variety to be found outside of western/northern Europe. Thousands of years and more than a continents worth, surely enough for *one* game at least.
