lots of games were made harder (in almost every case meaning A WORSE GAME) to deter rentals. This never worked and now tons of great games are fucked up unless they get a re-release

anyway my root point is that Half Life 3 is such a mythologized game in the mind of the gaming public that there's no way Valve could ever make it and have it be received well.
So their only options are:
1. don't ever make it
2. make it shit on accident
3. make it shit on purpose
