#albumshuffle Day 393: Amon Düül II - Phallus Dei [Liberty, 1969]

Classic heavy psychedelic album that's pretty far out. Lengthy jams with diversions into tribal drumming, dissonant electroacoustic experiments and dark folk. The vocals vacillate between the operatic and ridiculous.

#albumshuffle Day 392: Plinth - Wintersongs [Dorset Paeans, 2001]

A suite of winter compositions, fusing ambient soundscapes with pastoral folk. Lo-fi music box melodies, glockenspeil with dreamy guitar, piano and the drone of a melodica. Dreamy atmosphere, if a tad melancholic.

#albumshuffle Day 391: Ground Zero - Null & Void [Tzadik, 1995]

Second album from Otomo Yoshihide's amorphous genre bending band. Driving noisy rock improvisations; halting sound collages of japanse & chinese radio, martial music, tv & film; dub; ambient soundtrack work and free jazz experiments.

#albumshuffle Day 390: The West African Instrumental Quintet - 1929 [Heritage, 1992]

Every extant recording of a string band for which there is zero biographical information. Among the first wave of commercial West African records on the Zonophone label recorded in Hayes, England in the 20s.

#albumshuffle Day 389: Yuka Ijichi - How To Make Paper Clay [Selection Records, 2018]

A collection of gentle songs with a simple piano accompaniment. You can hear every slightest movement and breath. Very much in the vein of Reiko Kudo. Delicate and pretty.

#albumshuffle Day 388: Leon Thomas - Full Circle [Flying Dutchman, 1973]

Jazz singer Leon Thomas' last album for Flying Dutchman. It's pretty decent. He takes more commercial orientation with a mix of r&b songs with soul-inflected vocals and a couple more substantial jazzy pieces.

Back on the Doom stuff, returning to the Cacoward winning Blues Brothers 2025. I started it last month before life got in the way.

Love the snark-like gorefriends and the nuances to maximising their utility in locking down specific areas and lifespan. They're also extremely cute, which is a must.

Let the good times roll! Buying stuff makes me forget I'm on the verge of ruinous unemployment.

#albumshuffle Day 386: Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou - Volume 1: The Vodoun Effect - Funk & Sato from Benin’s Obscure Labels 1972–1975 [Analog Africa, 2008]

Wonderful slabs of funk and vodoun sounds from one of the most prolific bands in Benin. Extremely funky, joyous stuff. Sounds like a party.

#albumshuffle Day 385: Nobuo Yamada - Vase Echoes [ABH, 2004]

Sound artist from Japan sticks a microphone inside a vase and makes recordings from various locales including a roadside, on the back of a motorcycle, hanging from the roof of a shop and in a sink under a running tap.

#albumshuffle Day 384: Aube - Stratodive [Bandaged Hand Produce, 1996]

The single source used for this Aube cassette is a voltage controlled oscillator. With a bit of processing and overdubbing the end result is a howling wall of noise that's similar to standing outside in a strong gale.

#albumshuffle Day 383: Art Bears - Hopes and Fears [Rē Records, 1978]

The first Art Bears album, a group born from the fatal schism within Henry Cow. Most of songs are rejected pieces for Henry Cow recorded in January 78. Augmented by additional compositions by Frith/Cutler recorded months later.

Incredible survey of 20th century aboriginal country music from the Jimmie Rodgers/hillbilly influenced roots in the 1950s, country gospel, protest songs in the 70s and so much more.

A blend of various field recordings from the streets of Morocco and Gnawa music performed in the home of Maleem Boubker Ghania in Essaouira in 1994 - mostly led by his sons Mamoud and Abdellah.

#albumshuffle Day 380: Various - Female Blues Singers Volume 5: C/D/E (1921-1928) [Document Records, 1996]

The utilitarian cover communicates exactly what you're getting with this compilation: The complete recorded works of seven lesser-known female blues singers recorded in New York, LA & Chicago.

#albumshuffle Day 379: Masami Tada & Yasumasa Morimura - Kororo - Improvisation [Soh Gallery, 1997]

Improvised performance by sound artist & member of Marginal Consort Masami Tada and visual artist Yasumasa Morimura for Morimura's Wearing Ones Heart exhibition at Soh Gallery. It's another odd one.

#albumshuffle Day 378: Guitar Crusher - Blast From The Past [Gaztelupeko Hotsak, 2011]

In the running for coolest stage name for a bluesman. Born in rural North Carolina, moved to New York when he was 15. Developed one hell of a voice as a gospel singer. This collects of all seven of his 1960s 45s.

#albumshuffle Day 376: Acid Mothers Temple & The Cosmic Inferno - Anthem of the Space [Ektro Records, 2005]

The forty five minute title track is a slow spacey raga built around a simple repeated riff with the usual electric guitar improvisation, ufo synth and two lads going mental on the drums.

#albumshuffle Day 375: The Louvin Brothers - Nearer my God To Thee [Capitol, 1957]

Their first gospel focused bluegrass album for Capitol and a fine one at that. For my money, their blood harmonies are the finest in history. My weird fixation with are you washed in the blood notwithstanding.

#albumshuffle Day 374: Bill Orcutt - A History of Every One [Editions Mego, 2013]

Orcutt's solo acoustic guitar work in all its angular and dissonant glory. Attacking a variety of standards - including Disney dross - and twisting them into barely recognisable, halting forms. Real 21st century blues

#albumshuffle Day 373: Tonchi Pickles - gadgetronico! [pokopen recordings, 2011]

One man pop project from Fukuoka. All synths and samples to make some fun dub, techno and otherwise playful boingy music. A lot of stylistic variety if you enjoy a VGM-style polka or a bit of tabla and Arabic flavour.
