November 1st. Balcony garden on the wane but still determined. Some mums, marigolds, hardy basil, an optimistic tomato plant. Selkie still has his cat grass. Winter is coming.

As you prefer. Scene from the Trinity Bellwoods market. An abundant harvest and a vibrant community. Much to be thankful for.

My cat Selkie vocalizes loudly in the morning for me to get up and turn on the tap for him to drink. Oh and while you’re brushing your hair, what about me, you selfish human!

So many wonderful places to travel in the Caribbean! I loved the Dominican Republic, Antigua, Curaçao, Cuba … My favourite island so far is Guadeloupe. Pointe-à-Pitre was bustling and felt very safe. They have amazing graffiti artwork everywhere.

Please celebrate the sole fruit of my Cherokee Purple tomato plant. A valiant effort. Next time I will stick to cherry tomatoes. #balconygarden

It would be really great if we could stop policing what women wear. Unless we ask your opinion, it’s really not your business. Go touch grass, smell the roses and park your judgement elsewhere.

The New Westminster esplanade full of people strolling, chatting, playing and fishing is a beautiful, peaceful space. Shame about the vandalism. 🇨🇦

First cornflower aka bachelor’s button, self-seeded from last year. Volunteers I call them. My late mother-in-law: in Greek we call them bastards. Always makes me smile. #balconygarden

More chamomile flowers. Once they go to seed, there will be chamomile all through the garden. You only ever have to plant them once.

First cherry tomato blooms. Sakura. Soon Esterina will follow. Soon enough, cherry tomatoes warm right off the vine. 🍅

Chamomile blossoms. German chamomile with feathery green leaves, good leafy greens fresh every morning. Once the plant starts to flower, it puts all its energy into blossoms. The leaves become sparse and yellow.

Excellent book for our times: Nobel-winning journalist Maria Ressa’s How to stand up to a dictator. Duterte, disinformation, social media: a cautionary tale. Also my son’s gift to me for Xmas. He was right - definitely worth the read.

Love the Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market, 3-7 every Tuesday. Bought 3 different varieties of tomato plants, also Italian basil and Thai basil. Also sheep cheese, labneh and crème fraîche, asparagus, mushrooms, sorrel and fresh baked goods! Do yourself a favour-buy local, support Ontario farmers!
