Canadians! You can now vote for the Canadian Word of the Year!

(If we had the option to choose a Canadian WOTY in French as well, I'd suggest the gender-neutral pronoun "iel" which has been in the news a lot in Quebec this year, but probably not applicable since this is an English dictionary)
2025 has been an eventful year for Canada's identity. To commemorate the year, The Society for Canadian English is choosing a 2025 word of the year (CWOTY), based on the Dictionary of Canadianisms on Historical Principles.

i think if you put me in charge of high school curricula in the US, what i'd do is split the thing that's currently called "english" class* into "literatures" and "linguistics," the latter of which would focus on descriptive grammar, typology of world languages, and socioling
pretty frequently, one of my students (undergrads, frequently the fairly advanced ones who have done most or all of a degree in ling) will suddenly be like "why the fuck isn't linguistics taught in high school???" and i have to admit to them that as far as i am aware the reason is, it's expensive

if you, like me, do not care about advent, i can report that these also work great as motivation to do a daily task (my eels calendar is for physiotherapy exercises, and i got a previous year's frog facts calendar for doing the dishes :)
LISTEN UP!

December 1 is Monday.
This means I only have another 6 days to get an advent calendar to you.. Those days include Thanksgiving and a Sunday.

I will be doing a post office drop tomorrow! This is your last chance. I can't guarantee it'll get there by Monday, but it could!

"Dogs don't bark at parked cars" is an all-time great line
"My mentor always tells me, 'Kim, dogs don’t bark at parked cars." They’re coming after critical race theory, 1619, intersectionality because these ideas mobilized people. They gave them the language to actually articulate what they were seeing with their own eyes," says Kimberlé Crenshaw.

trying an experiment where i explicitly tell the (resident/fellow) that the (supervisor/attending) is sometimes bad at pronouns before they go bring them in the room, so they have time to mentally prep themselves before potentially needing to do a correction

Same for literary studies. Non-tenure-track lit studies scholars I know you're out there and publishing articles and books. And if you're tenure-track and know NTT authors, let me know about their work! I can reach out and confirm that they're cool with being listed.
Haven't received as many contributions as usual for this year's lists--could be many things, but one aspect is surely that our ability to get this in front of people is much diminished. If you know folks whose stuff should be on here, please suggest it! contingentmagazine.org/yearly-pub-l...
