Today is World Cancer Day and here is something I made last year about how my cancer informed my work. The documentary I produced and edited that will air this Saturday on Lifetime at 10PM. "Gloria Gaynor: I Will Survive" was to be positive work I left behind if I didn't make it. 1/2

Rewatched ’Blue Velvet’ (Dir. David Lynch, 1986) tonight. Working on a broader review but I’m proud of this paragraph and wanted to share:

“On the surface this is just a solid crime noir, but…”

This simple exchange between Cooper and Denise changed the way I thought about transgender people. I didn't know the word "transgender" at the time, just "cross-dresser" unfortunately, but in one fell swoop, I learned to just accept folks with ease. David Lynch did this. 1/4

Rewatched ‘Freejack’ (1992).I was feeling sad about stuff in life, needed something to entertain me in a fun way, and this rewatch totally fit the bill. Freejack is gloriously not good. At one point, my wife ducked in and said "Is that a joke?" I said "Yes." She said "Are you watching a parody?"

First WaPo, now The Economist. Wtf does “defining truth” even mean? You know what, I don’t care. ✌️

What’s a good film to watch when you’re mourning someone? There’s no correct answer. Just yours. I started “Grave of the Fireflies” and realized that was not the right choice for me.

It is times like these I wish I had no empathy. I wouldn't have to think about his mother looking over her son in a hospital bed, debating extubation. I wouldn't think of his wife of 5 years, now a widow. I wouldn't have to think of his poor fucking dog... 1/3

Pulling the thread and moving over to posting here more often, I think.

Watched the Irish film ‘Black ‘47’ (Dir. Lance Daly, 2018). Imagine Death Wish took place in Connemara during the mid-19th century. Instead of muggers you’ve got stock British villains. Sprinkle in some Western vibes and fantastic actors. Boom, you have Black ‘47.

Carrie Fisher passed away 8 years ago yesterday. Most remember her as Princess Leia (whose dialogue Fisher would humorously say “Isn’t English, you know?”)

But I always remembered her as one of my childhood crushes, “Mystery Woman” from ‘The Blues Brothers’ (1980). I mean…

Apparently my brain needs a ton of rest.
A doctor friend once told me that procrastination is the brain trying to get the rest you refuse to give it, and honestly, nothing has ever made more sense to me.

This is me, watching the 28 Years Later trailer.
An absolute masterclass in editing a trailer.
If the movie were coming out today I'd go see it now.

It’s wild how ‘The Rainmaker’ was made almost 30 years ago but still is relevant. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola and starring Matt Damon and Roy Scheider. Only in todays case, Roy’s character would get gunned down in Manhattan, I guess.

On this day in 1901, future Mickey Mouse voice Walt Disney was born in Chicago. Fun fact: Walt Disney forged his birthdate to join WWI and fight the Germans. Denied combat, he became an ambulance driver for the red cross, but arrived after the armistice was signed. Nice try, Walt.

Anyway...

All these people wringing their hands over the pardon and crying about “precedent” and “norms” like those are things that’ll survive beyond January anyway. Cute.

Tried watching the film ‘Manhattan’ and…

It’s like if “Lolita” were actually written by Humbert Humbert and not Nabokov.

Man, I tried. For Gordon Willis’ cinematography if nothing else. But if this is Woody Allen’s masterpiece, what the actual fuck is wrong with people?

Movie Birthday! ‘Rocky’ premiered in New York City on this day in 1976. It catapulted Sylvester Stallone’s star so far that some people think Rocky Balboa is a real person.

Sly was down to $100 in his bank account and sold his dog to make ends meet about 6 months before shooting began...

I have to disagree in that my wife and kid (and anyone of any gender) really hate sharing a bathroom with me and they’d rather not. Particularly after Chinese food.
Private note to Congress:

I’ve been running a 53-year-long experiment on gender neutral bathrooms:

Every single home I’ve ever lived in has been one where I have been forced to share a bathroom with other genders.

So far, no problems.
