With every shake to mix up this memory-dooming potion added energy and drama that this man would probably regret come morning. “I have a hard time believing that my daughter, of all daughters, would move on so callously, so emotionlessly, after getting in a shouting match with me years ago that that boy would be the one and only, the fut—gods, you look so much like your mother pouting like that. Stop it, I get it.” His voice and theatrics had risen then ended in wheezing laughter as he set the shaker down roughly with the table answering in a loud, shuddering creak.

“Get out.” The howl woke him from the dead of sleep. He'd never fallen asleep on the bench before. Never had the chance—these tests were minutes. He twisted in his seat to peer over the window ledge into the chamber. It was dark. No testing, no father—nothing—though the chamber looked undisturbed. The digital clock posted high on the wall in the chamber read out two in the morning. He’d been left out here for three hours? Therion scowled at the clock. Something about it was wrong. Colorful aberrations played within the oddly distorted red liquid crystal. When it flipped a minute past, the digit flipped between one and seven and two and five and three and four and one… His skin crawled but he steeled himself. It was a trick of light coming through the thick laboratory glass, nothing more. Father was one for harmless pranks, but never ones so creepy. He hopped off the bench to head towards his room but stopped at the sound of plastic tap under his shoe that echoed over the metal walls. He picked the card up and flipped it over. It was his father’s; the name Dr. Makariy Olyevich Romashenko was laser-etched next to what he knew as a decade-old headshot of the man who seemed to have barely aged a day since except for the small lines around his eyes. Perhaps there’d been a breakthrough. Therion could forgive that—maybe—and so he pocketed the keycard to give his father an earful in the morning.

Carwyn Gray was a complicated man. It made sense, in hindsight, thinking about all the little quirks he had, the inconsistencies in someone that was supposedly so young. I remembered one day watching him translating runes into Common in his office. When I asked him about it, he too readily responded that it was a hobby of his. The way he did his work though, it was as if he was translating his mother tongue into his second—or third, fourth… who knew, really. The occasional errors he made were, as I consider it now, in the older form of Shiseikan or the Itak script, not the wrong words in Common like you would expect. He would mutter that there wasn't “a good equivalent term” for this or that. It seemed odd then, but it was the start of my suspicion that the charismatic leader of the Grays was more than a regular, upstart man from southern Fannarey.

I think you need a new perspective! You've been following routines from family journals for years now, and it's the same, sad story you update me on week after week.” Bert unlocked and opened the door, beckoning Mori inside enthusiastically while keeping an eye out for customers he didn't need right now before promptly shutting and locking it behind him. “And I'd like to see you consider something different. Get some fire in you! The way things are right now, you're just going to keep following the past in that house no matter what I tell you, so I'm deeming that change in location is necessary. What worked for the ones before you may not be what works for you. You're, you know, a little different.”

I began a new bone, carving the first line into it. When I counted my pile, I had fifteen complete bones with twenty-four marks each. Starting this meant the three-hundred and sixty-first night since I started keeping track. Upon completing this bone… we would be approaching a year since we went missing as far as we could tell. It could be considered a miracle that we survived this long, but that would ignore our teamwork and labor. Neither of us could have done this on our own. Setting the bone down, I watched Etti from the cave entrance try to split wood with the axe I made several weeks ago. Even if he was still a thin, bookish man, there was strength and confidence building in his limbs that he never would have gained had we not met, had this not happened. It looked as though he was having some level of success for a change.

I have a picrew for this (god this is 2020)!

Lycia, Mana's mom, passed away when she was 4. Mana doesn't remember much about her, but a lot of the personality she grows into is very much her mom's.

Keahi adored her so dearly that he'd gotten his life's fill of relationships over their 14 years. +
