I wonder if this person has ever said "men suck," or some variant. From a perspective of relative privilege, a blanket statement like that shouldn't bother men.

I honestly never realized what big fucking babies we were until 2022, when there was a lot more interaction with Europeans regarding foreign policy (or at least I was suddenly paying a lot more attention to it)
November 26, 2025 at 9:54 PM
are you American or Canadian?
November 26, 2025 at 9:49 PM
sure but as you said upthread, it's a ridiculous definition of "poverty line" or anything close to it.
November 26, 2025 at 9:44 PM
we need some more detail here because "Other essentials" is **more than my entire income.** I realize that's for a family of four, and I'm sure it includes actual essentials like soap but I genuinely have no idea what else you need to spend $1800/month on that's not on the rest of the itemized list.

(I thought I was replying in a thread that mentioned that homeless people need phones in order to be in the modern world, which is why I said "only device")
November 26, 2025 at 9:16 PM
sure but if we're talking about someone who NEEDS to use it for email, navigation, and other normal life stuff, I would pay for something better with a warranty. Especially if that was my only device.
November 26, 2025 at 9:15 PM
sure but to be fair you did ask a specific question about phones with a question mark at the end. If it was rhetorical as part of a larger point, then that wasn't clear.

My plan (Ting) is usually $17 / month with PAYG data, HOWEVER, I don't go out much (so it's mostly on wi-fi) and I wouldn't trust the coverage in rural areas.

?? you can very easily get a phone for $500. you can get a brand new iphone 16 directly from apple for $599

I have had my iphone 11 since 2020, it's fine except it needs to be charged more often.

bluesky leans much much farther left than any other platform though.

I have seen a lot of things that aren't meant to be seen by Westerners and in those context it's perfectly okay if everyone knows what it means. I would STRONGLY caution you against posting one here because you will DEFINITELY get on some racist blocklists.
November 26, 2025 at 8:35 PM
because I wonder what the breakdown is there
November 26, 2025 at 8:34 PM
(I'm not making a joke) I assume that includes porn sites and not just "traditional" ones like Netflix etc?
November 26, 2025 at 8:34 PM
yeah context is SO important

Ukrainians are very sarcastic and ironic, so in 2022 it was really hard for me to tell if a given poster genuinely thought (e.g.) Zelenskyy was a coke addict, or if they were mocking common russian propaganda about him.
November 26, 2025 at 8:33 PM
it was used so that they could say racist things and when people got upset they would say "calm down, it's just a joke, look, it's just a funny frog meme"
November 26, 2025 at 8:30 PM
if you're not from the US I recommend reading British news, because they will explain things to people who do not have the context. www.bbc.com/news/live/cm...
November 26, 2025 at 8:28 PM
yeah I'm positive it's not that, but some are clearly hoping it is.

Maidan literally means square or plaza, but it is associated with the 2014 Ukrainian protests and ensuing revolution.

(In that case, the police fired on protesters.)

it's not common, by any means. it just doesn't have the same connotations it does here.
November 26, 2025 at 8:20 PM
yeah context is everything.

for example pepe is not a racist thing there, not even ironically, and it was pretty jarring to see in 2022 until I saw it in more contexts.
