FINE: TL;DR 🦑🧪🌎

Plastic pollution is a problem.

People should use less plastic when they can

Straws became a culture-war flashpoint and are not the biggest source of plastic pollution.

Everyone talks about this, especially solutions, wrong.

Some people absolutely need plastic straws.

More: 🧵
You People are gonna make me do my “as an ocean conservation scientist, you’re thinking about plastic straws wrong” rant again, aren’t you?

Can/should undergraduates engage with the primary literature in classes? ✅

Are there many articles appropriate for undergraduate learning? ❌

Am I frustrated by this every single semester? ✅ x1000

A solution: Publish a primer w/ @ijpsjournal.bsky.social! #PlantScience 🧪🌍

As some of you know, in 2024 @ijpsjournal.bsky.social launched a new series of occasional papers: Primers in the Plant Sciences. You can learn about the philosophy behind the Primer series and browse all of the published and in press Primers here:

Where are all the field studies?

This ⬇️ important but rather depressing paper describes how conducting, & crucially initiating, field studies is becoming harder & rarer.

A short 🧵 (and a call for more fieldwork)
www.cell.com/trends/ecolo...
Extinction of experience among ecologists
Fieldwork-based research and education in ecology are under multiple threats and are progressively declining. We call for greater attention to this ongoing loss of direct field experience within the ecology community, as it could have widespread consequences for science and education, ultimately hindering efforts to address the ongoing biodiversity crisis.

Advent Sci-Fact 4:

New headlights hurt moths!

Unlike us, moths can’t blink in bright light. Moths are more likely to fly erratically towards pulses of cool toned phosphor-LEDs, compared with warmer and RGB lights. Meaning new headlights are more harmful.

When Mount St Helens erupted in 1980, ash buried everything for miles around. Scientists dropped gophers onto selected areas for just 24 hrs. The soil & plant cover benefits from fungi & bacteria dug up from under the ash that one day are still visible 40 years later.

We have heard a lot of buzz about how feeding seaweed — and other dietary supplements — to cows can reduce their methane emissions, and help address climate change.

Sounds great, right?

But the results to date are really disappointing.
