Okay, my follower count and mix on here is now such that I need to say this:

If you know me in real life, no you don't.

If you saw me at a place I can routinely be found, no you didn't.

Thank you for understanding.
The Salvation Army bell ringers are out. I thought this year instead of just ignoring them (rude) I would print out a little card outlining my issues with the organization.

I started by copying and pasting the wikipedia "controversies" section.

IT IS SIX PAGES LONG.

Gonna have to trim this.

I have participated in the creeping menace that is "Black Friday" sales.

I left some jeans in my cart for a month to see if it would go on sale for the holidays. They did, and I bought them. I feel kinda gross about it. But in my defense, it was the only way I could afford 97% denim.

If we're doing Hot Pie Takes, here's mine: No pie is worth the effort. Just make the filling and eat it with a spoon. You can put crumbly stuff on top if you want.
Apple pie is bad. This is not really debatable. So is key lime pie, while we’re on the topic. Pecan pie is the 🐐 tho.

NaNoWriMo day 25.

I'm pretty sure I just changed something back to the way it was in the very first draft.

Why am I like this.

Need a cultural read here:

1. Do you know the song "Simple Gifts"

and

2. Would it seem out of place to you in a winter holiday context

NaNoWriMo day 24.

Doing more writing than cutting today, thanks in part to a note I left myself at 2 AM and then had to decipher this morning.

I haven't posted any excerpts in this process, so find one below, I guess:

Got another ai slop "Your book is so good! BuY oUR PrOMo pAckAge!!!" email today.

I was going to read and mock it, but then I realized it's so long it's very nearly a novella.

If people are doing to use LLMs to run scams, can they at least teach them when to shut the fuck up?

Teacher literally weaponized the Someone is Wrong on the Internet phenomenon.

NaNoWriMo day 23.

I realized in this editing process that my apocalypse book from a decade ago is an accidental travel guide to pre-Covid Portland, Oregon. Most of the places I included have gone out of business in the last five years. They will be missed and memorialized.

I'll say this for millennials; we've leaving thrift stores a lot weirder than we found them.

Dreamed that friends and I checked out a new Third Eye Blind themed bar in town. It was empty. Stephen Jenkins was just sitting by himself at a high table waiting for people to talk to him, which no one did. Woke up feeling sorry for him.

I don't know what the opposite of this gif is, but it seems to be happening on my timeline right now.

NaNoWriMo day 21.

Migraine! Knew it was going to happen sooner or later.

I have taken the drugs. I will still do some edits. I will have to go back once the migraine is gone and do it again, because migraine brain can't be trusted, but I can't break my streak.

I found a good paragraph today. Not just tolerable. Good.

I finally started Enshittification by Cory Doctorow in audiobook to decide which format I want to rec it in.

The fact that it actually has @edzitron.com saying the line in the intro charms me.

I am not good at femme, but I sang both "Valerie" and "Vampire" at karaoke tonight and didn't die, so I guess I can fake it on occasion.

The main thing I have on Mastodon that I don't have here is nerds who keep me passively up to date on tech zeitgeist.

Where are the unrepentant dorks arguing about linux distros, and do any of them want to be friends?

I feel like there were a lot of songs in the late 90s themed around "maybe seeing this much violent news fucks you up" and then we then immediately turned around and cranked that problem up until the knob broke off.

I'm in the current issue of Analog. I managed to negotiate to a contract I was willing to sign. Naively, I thought that established writers giving this feedback would eventually make a dent.

It hasn't. I don't know that it will. I just wrote to Trevor withdrawing a story I'd sold to him.
Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

I demand time travel technology so I can visit the Past Me that wrote this awful fucking paragraph and smack them on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper while hissing "Trust. The. Reader. They. Are not. Stupid."
