The horizon cameras were for helping with interpretation of the pancam images. I don't know, but I assume that they had a device where they could measure the horizon and it would quickly tell them if the satellite was pointing straight down or slightly off when the pancam took its photo.

Okay, here you go--horizon camera on CORONA:

Actually, thinking about this a little more, I think this is the horizon camera.

Didn't CORONA had horizon cameras that captured the horizon to either side in order to determine pointing angle? I used to know all this. I seem to remember that at the edge of each panoramic image there was a small picture of the horizon. Maybe that is what this is?

I have a very vague memory of hearing/reading about CORONA being rolled to take oblique photos. I cannot remember why. And my memory could be wrong. Resolution is terrible that way.

I wonder what happened to that model? Must have been trashed.

Was this taken by the panoramic camera?

There is also a new eruption in Ethiopia. Coincidence? Or conspiracy? Probably the latter. We're probably doomed.

Although I am not a fan of the Bond movies, I've seen almost all of them and there were parts I liked. And I've listened to a lot of podcasts about them. It's going to be tough to revive the franchise, because it's rather empty at its core. More style than substance.

Yeah. But by the time of Austin Powers, Mike Meyers had a lot more to parody.
November 24, 2025 at 3:27 PM
Yeah, that gives you some sense of it. That's just the AAF air photo unit. There were a lot of people setting up the cameras on the ground. It was a major undertaking.

No argument from me. I've never been a fan of the franchise. It never really had a center and was always chasing whatever was current in the zeitgeist. It relied on its gimmicks too much, which made it vulnerable to parody.

Years ago I sent a friend of mine a photo of the astronauts in "2001: A Space Odyssey" signed by Dave Bowman and Frank Poole. He was thrilled. I had to remind him that those were not the actors' names. Normally he isn't that dumb.

All the movies are less than the sum of their parts--some clever skits and spoofs, not very coherent. But Daniel Craig pointed out that they destroyed the Bond schtick, forcing the Bond franchise to reinvent itself.

There is a big book that lists all the Bikini photography equipment. All the cameras assembled, etc. I think Walter Levenson of Itek showed it to me when I interviewed him in the 1990s. Surprisingly, when I asked him what he was most proud of, he pointed to it and said "That." I didn't understand.

I was making a joke about how lucky you were to get something signed by "Bill Krause."
