HS Biology teacher.
Mom.
Bibliophile.
Nature enthusiast.
ExMo.
Lover of naps and road trips and binge-watching shows. Oh, and diet Pepsi.
I am teaching genetic traits and inheritance patterns in Biology.

The question: "If you were a trait, would you be dominant, recessive, or heterozygous? Tell me why."

One student's answer: "dominant because they give big dick energy & I want that"

I have been giggling about this all day. 😂

Halloween on a Friday is a teacher's dream come true! 😂

WHAT A WEEK!

The theme was 80s icons. (Nailed it!)

The candlelight concert was Halloween-themed.

The kids spent Halloween with friends, so I passed out candy and went to see a smoke-breathing dragon.

Thanks for the memories, October! 🎃👻🍁

A little love from my students on a Monday. 🥰
(And it's a SUCH a Monday... ugh.)

We are studying cellular energy in biology, and a big part of that is photosynthesis.

Yesterday, we did stomata peels, which my kids dubbed "Leaf Manicures" and... well...

I tried to make my stomata look less... female

...so I gave the guard cells hats, and- oops!- turned them into penises. 🤦🏼

In slightly related news, my advisory class tied for 2nd place in the school-wide bulletin board competition. I know I'm biased, but it is AWESOME.

My favorite part is the tree carving. 🥰

Say you teach at a high school without saying you teach at a high school.

(And now tell me what this means, because if I have to hear it 12,000 times a day, I want to at least know why it's so funny.)

(Is it because they're dumb?
It's probably because they're dumb... BLESS THEIR HEARTS.)

Will you settle for a kayaking squirrel?

Ever since I saw one in the movie Tangled, I have wanted to experience a lantern festival.

I FINALLY got a chance, and it was every bit as magical as I had hoped. 🥰✨

Thank you, @javajoe.boo, for joining me on another adventure. My life is better because I get to do it with you. ❤️

We said goodbye to my parents' house today. 🥲

The grandkids wanted to have one final Easter egg hunt in the backyard, so we spent the morning hiding and seeking, sharing childhood memories, and gorging on pizza.

Then we took one last picture on the front step.

I'm going to miss that house. 😭

Today's questionable student interaction:

T: A lot of your clothes have patterns on them. Why is that?

Me: ...What? Um, because I'm not boring?

T: It's a lot of patterns, Kemi. Not gonna lie.

Me: Well, they are adult clothes.

T: SO... MANY... PATTERNS...

The shirt being scrutinized:

@javajoe.boo and I had lunch at a cozy little Chinese place today. He didn't grab a fortune cookie on the way out, so I offered to share my fortune with him.

He laughed and said, "I'll only claim it if it's good. If it's bad, it can be all yours." (Gee, thanks.) 😄

Turns out, it was perfect. 🥰

I love it when students leave notes on my board. 🥰

The school and district emails are increasing in frequency, even though my first contract day is Aug. 7.

I will have to think about next year soon enough. For now, I'm going to sleep in and have lazy days with my kids and enjoy the last few weeks of our summer.

I just mowed the front lawn like this, in front of God and all the neighbors. I didn't even put on a bra.

50.

Happiness is also spending that same blissful week with your favorite person, watching shows, trying local restaurants, visiting National Parks new to both of you, touring college campuses, kissing on a Shakespeare stage, accidentally attending a ren faire, and looking at stars.

It was ✨MAGICAL.✨

Happiness is spending a week in a beautiful city on a beautiful campus, growing your career and building professional connections. It's catching lizards and measuring stream velocity and building (and flooding!) tiny communities on an erosion table to simulate geological (in)stability.

Okay, can someone explain why Geosciences got their own building THIRTEEN YEARS EARLIER than the rest of the sciences (who, I'm assuming, are all housed in the same place)?

First night in Cedar City did NOT disappoint.

Gorgeous sunset, SUU Rotunda, and stargazing above the "C" overlook with the city below.

It's going to be a good week. 😊

The book I'm currently reading is a historical fiction about the Spanish Flu epidemic/aftermath, and there are so many parallels to Covid, as well as the current state of our country.

It's proving to be more difficult than I expected, which makes me wonder if I'm doing it wrong. 🥴

Happiness is a "just because" gift from someone who has taken the time to know and appreciate my interests, and, even though he doesn't love baseball the way I do, kindly suggested we take a road trip (or two) to visit a few ball parks in my newfound free time... plus portable projects.

My heart. 🥰

I spent the morning on the set of Galaxy Quest, looking for beryllium spheres and trying to avoid the locals. #GoblinValley
