The cartoon suggests that support wasn't worth much. because Kefauver was backed by "carpetbaggers." What that means in the context of a national campaign, I don't know. (Actually, I do know, and it reflects poorly on the author of the cartoon. Let's just say the idea of "real Americans" isn't new.)

Inside, the pamphlet is titled "Kefauver Throws His Coonskin Cap Into the Arena" (callback to TR's "man in the arena" speech), and the text calls him the "Democratic Sir Galahad."

With praise like this, you understand why Time magazine dubbed him "Senator Legend."

It's not really a fair crack - the Tribune was a famous Republican paper, after all.
