When you're in a parade, the only way to travel is Cadillac style!

Kefauver greets the crowd during the Fourth of July parade in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1952. The parade was celebrating the town's centennial.

We got some snow today! Not enough to break out the snowshoes, as Kefauver did in New Hampshire in 1952. We got a strictly conversational amount of snow, but it was pretty to look at.

Stand back, I'm on staff!

This button, obviously, is from the 1956 Presidential campaign. As a font nerd, I'll point out that the two fonts on this button don't go together. (I'll refrain from arguing that this was a metaphor for the campaign itself.)

This cartoon ran in the Shreveport Times in July 1956, after Kefauver lost in the primaries but before the convention. At the time, both Adlai Stevenson and Averell Harriman (depicted on the right) were vying for Kefauver's support.

A friendly moment between foes!

Kefauver and Stevenson shake hands when their campaigns cross paths in Miami in May 1956.

The foes would become allies after the convention, when Kefauver became Stevenson's running mate.

The latest entry of Kefauver's Clearwater Chronicles (from his visit to Florida in April 1952). These are closeups of him during his speech on the courthouse steps.

Pay special attention to the rotating cast of kids standing/sitting next to him. They're a hoot!

I approve this message, but to be honest, the wording is a little strange.

“I’m for Adlai-Estes”? That’s the way you want to label your ticket?

I understand you only have so many options when your candidates both have long and unusual names, but this isn’t it.

As always, I'm thankful for all of you who have read and supported the site over the past year! Looking forward to continuing the conversation.

Bring democracy back to Tennessee… vote for Kefauver!

This brochure from 1948 pulls no punches. Tired of the bosses telling you who your Senator will be? You now have a choice. Kefauver: the man of the people!

This cartoon, from a pamphlet by the Oregon Women's Committee for Kefauver, exemplifies the mythical stature he had during his 1952 run for President.

"Crimebuster Kefauver," the buckskin-clad frontiersman, is off to explore uncharted lands ("The Presidency"). It's steeped in American mythology.

Yet another example of Kefauver being great with kids.

Here, he's shooting the breeze with a couple coonskin-capped lads after his campaign speech in Clearwater, Florida in April 1952.

This illustration, from another 1948 Kefauver Senate brochure, established a truth that shaped the rest of his career.

Kefauver was David, doing battle with the Goliaths of big business. In the Fifties, it was a lonely battle, but he waged it bravely.

This cartoon, from a Kefauver 1948 Senate brochure, sums up his political appeal.

Through 15 years in the Senate and two runs for President, he never lost sight of this. It's why the people, even those who disagreed with him on issues, loved him so much.

This 1956 Chicago Tribune cartoon suggests that the primary Democratic contenders (Estes Kefauver, Adlai Stevenson, and Averell Harriman) were not supported by their home states.

Is that a coonskin cap in your hand, or are you just happy to see me?

On the campaign trail in New Hampshire in 1956, Kefauver shares his headgear outside an Elks Lodge with a group of admiring ladies.

The next two shots show the crowd assembled to watch him. Newspapers estimated the audience between 700 and 1,000 people.

Kefauver is hotter than a Florida summer!

The Senator speaks from the courthouse steps in Clearwater, Florida ahead of the 1952 Democratic primary. His primary opponent, Senator Richard Russell of Georgia, spoke there the day before.

Howdy, little buckaroo!

During a California campaign stop in 1956, Kefauver shakes hands with a patriotic young cowboy while greeting his older sister, as their mother looks on.

Meanwhile, I included this close-up just because I thought it was cute.

I included this close-up because it feels relevant to our current political context.

America is no place for dictators!

Don't like dictators? Vote Kefauver!

This, from a brochure for his first Senate run in 1948, highlights a theme of his campaign: equating "dictators at home" (political machine bosses, specifically Boss Crump of Memphis) to "dictators abroad" (totalitarian regimes).

A passing of the (coonskin) torch!

Diane Kefauver, daughter of Estes, greets Minnesota Sen. Eugene McCarthy with a coonskin cap at the Nashville airport. McCarthy visited Nashville as part of his Presidential campaign in July 1968.

Kefauver talks to the Mad Men!

This ad, from December 1949, promotes a Kefauver speech to the Ad Club of Greater Buffalo.

"Which Way America" sounds like an exciting topic, doesn't it? Bet you're wondering what the speech is about. So am I.

Want to join the Kefauver campaign? Walk this way!

This is a sign advertising the headquarters for Kefauver's Senatorial campaign. (I think this was the 1954 reelection campaign, not his original campaign in '48.)
