A blast from my past - the Medieval Soldier database takes nearly 300,000 military service records from 1369-1453 and makes them available as a searchable database.

An invaluable resource for understanding medieval warfare, society and the English medieval state. Learn more in the link. 🗃️
We built a database of 290,000 English medieval soldiers – here’s what it reveals
We created the database in order to challenge assumptions about the lack of professionalism of everyday soldiers.

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

You might want to watch this. Berlin 1933 on iPlayer. Three parter, all very familiar, and useful if you think history doesn’t repeat itself.

4% of annual finds recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme were DONATED to Museums.... thats right 4%

📢One last time folks 4%📢

C'mon people, without Generosity, Donation, Giving, Legacy or Sharing how do we & our future generations have access to our shared heritage?
OK. These are the new, updated, figures for 2023.

Utterly miserable reading -

"1,343 #treasure finds reported in 2023 (1,091 object cases and 252 coin cases). Of these cases:

❌️328 (24%) were acquired by museums (260 object cases, 68 coin cases)"❌️

Figures from the 2023 TVC minutes are even worse at over £7 million in recommended 'reward' valuations (including the £4.3 million Chew Valley hoard).

That’s an awful lot of museum curators’ salaries per year being paid out to individual finders and landowners…

Honestly, this is so grim...😞

Cold day at the #allotment plot. Put canes away sorted compost, sowed green manure winter rye, and covered over Florence fennel. Apples, potatoes, peppers, chillies, garlic, cima di rapa, parsley and some small courgettes, plus beetroot and carrots, celery and pumpkins. Lawrence Hills book is ace!

Work in progress scanning and visualising Wainstones 6 rock art. It's already different to what I thought... 🤔

Most detailed one I've done yet - and it's barely visible in person.
