At family Thanksgiving tables this year, the absences of Melissa and Mark Hortman as well as Charlie Kirk were sadly felt. It was the same for too many people whose loved ones have been killed so far in mass shootings in the United States this year, where there are more guns than in any other country.

The Afghan refugee accused of shooting two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., fought in the late days of the U.S. war there as part of a "Zero Unit," a paramilitary force that worked with the C.I.A., according to a person briefed on the investigation and an Afghan intelligence officer familiar with the matter. The units were known for their brutality and labeled "death squads" by human rights groups. The suspect, identified by federal officials as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, grew up in a village in the eastern province of Khost. A childhood friend, who asked to be identified only as Muhammad because he feared Taliban reprisals, said that Mr. Lakanwal had suffered from mental health issues and was disturbed by the casualties his unit had caused.

People used to dress up to fly for two reasons: one, clothing was expensive and cheap mass produced and mass marketed casual clothes didn’t really exist; and two, flying was so goddamned expensive that only the rich and upper middle class could fly.

A new report from Network Contagion Research Institute (NCRI) documents other instances of what it calls “journalistic malpractice,” including one instance in which The Washington Post published a year-old photo in an article arguing that a “worst-case scenario is finally unfolding” in Gaza. A Post spokesperson replied that it issued a correction to reflect that the photo was taken in June 2024.

We are proud of the report and the reporters who tracked it down. In doing so, Olivia Reingold and Tanya Lukyanova performed a public service by asking and answering a simple question: In a moment of widespread charges by international institutions and news outlets about hunger in Gaza, are these photographs representative? More: How is it that journalists failed to scrutinize information coming out of a war zone with an active terrorist group conducting kinetic and information warfare? Journalistic outlets love to boast about “impact,” and this story has had more than its share. CNN updated its piece after our reporting, noting at the top that the story had been “updated to reflect new information regarding the condition of some of the subjects.” So did The Washington Post, issuing a correction to say that it had “incorrectly” used a year-old photo in its current coverage of “mass starvation” in Gaza. The Guardian issued no correction but stealthily added one important detail to its coverage: that a previously featured child had cerebral palsy.

Political post-liberalism, however, does not begin with post-liberal ideas. It begins with the inchoate populist revolts of the Brexit referendum and Donald Trump's victory in 2016, which precious few intellectuals anticipated, and it has taken various ad hoc and unstable forms since then. A short list of those forms might include the "peak woke" cultural regime of 2020 to 2022, which was a post-liberalism with academic origins that deliberately resisted attempts to define its ideological contours; Trump's second administration, which is post-liberal in a sense highly specific to Trump himself (protectionist and personally corrupt, e.g.); and the managerial systems that seek to contain populism using illiberal means, of which Britain's censorious regime is the most notable example. None of these systems are fully post-liberal, and none of them are founded on a clear worldview that can be traced to a specitic set of thinkers. Rather, they're all contingent responses to popular ructions and elite panics, with theory stapled on belatedly. Now, he was himself behind bars on suspicion of having aided and abetted terrorism. Less than a year later, when Hashmi was extradited to the US, the FBI revealed that a man who had stayed at the detainee's apartment in London had supplied "military gear" to Al Qaeda members in Pakistan. Then, Hashmi's lawyer found out that the items being labeled as "military gear" were socks and rainproof ponchos. The rest of the details of the indictment remain shrouded in mystery. The FBI has revealed nothing more.

Ferhani's supporters say that he was entrapped by the NYPD in a terrorism case after an investigation failed to turn up any illegal activity despite extensive surveillance, leading to his current incarceration. The FBI reportedly removed itself from the investigation because of the weakness of the case against Ferhani. The NYPD has come under heavy attack since the Associated Press published details of its extensive surveillance of Muslim communities, including lawsuits filed in New York and New Jersey.
