Salt. "Protection, banishing negativity."

I'm extending its influence to anyone who needs it.

The card looks to be drawn in coloured pencils. A wooden bowl heaped with salt at the centre of the card. A wooden spoon pokes out of the bowl with a pentacle inscribed into its handle. A circle of salt encompasses the bowl and three jagged crystals. (Please don't ask me to identify them - two are dark, one is white or clear.) An eye of Horus is inscribed on a disc which sits on top of the salt ring, down centre of the bowl of salt. The disc has a chain attached so it could be worn as a necklace - the chain is within the salt circle. The background of the image is a little abstract and could be an explosion of stars or a swirling snowstorm on a black background. There is a border that brackets the corners of the image - plant or vine-like with tiny tiny flowers.

Fighting crime in Canada means tights and a turtleneck under your superhero costume. 4-year-old me in 1982 with 2-year-old Superman.

I have built it! Will he come?
A cardboard box, roughly the size of a large microwave. The top is sealed shut by that trick where you fold each flap half under the next all the way around. Four holes, about 3” in diameter, have been cut into one of the long faces of the box. Small, mirror-ball cat toys have been suspended from the top of the box (on the outside) so they hang roughly centred in each hole. So if a cat were lying inside the box, he would have a choice of toys to bat at, basically. On one of the unseen short ends, there is a larger hole cut so he can get in and out. (I saw this whole setup on Instagram and had a box handy, so I’m experimenting!)

A certain orange someone is making the tiniest, saddest whimpers while I’m trying to work. Apparently I am required to go and sit in the chair with him?

Poor Marlowe had a hard day. Two smoke alarms (just my oven being an oven), the dreaded vacuum cleaner, and now OTHER HUMANS IN HIS HOUSE.
I have so much sucking up to do…

I’m so excited to be part of ACTRA Toronto’s Working the Scene in Rainbow 5!! They will be reading a scene from my pilot Luck Be a Lady.

I’ll post details again closer to the date, but the event is Monday, June 9th at 7pm, in person and on Zoom.

Aaand I also finally found the emotional fortitude to frog the long-abandoned square 3 all the way back to the beginning and start over, so square 3 (of 12) is also complete! I am officially halfway through! 🧶
An elaborate crochet square with a mandala pattern. Worked in a fingering-weight wool/cotton blend. It’s a self-striping (self-shading?) yarn that starts as a medium rose pink at the centre and shades to a dark, dusty purple toward the edges. The outermost 4-5 rows are a medium pink-purple because I once again lost my game of yarn chicken and ended up with a “trim” done from another ball, but the colours on this one match so well it looks deliberate. I haven’t measured, but the square is probably about 12” across?

Square 6 (of 12) is complete! I’m supposed to be able to get three squares from a ball, but my gauge is looser than the pattern, so I lost my game of yarn chicken. I’m only realizing this now because of the issues with square 3 (see quoted post below). 🧶

The outermost three rows are light grey, because I ran out of yarn, but it kind of looks like a trim, so we’re all just going to live with it. (The perfectionist in me is breathing into a paper bag, but she’ll be fine eventually.) I haven’t measured, but the square is probably about 12” across?

I think it might eat me in my sleep…
A very healthy aloe plant in a terra cotta pot, seen from above. The aloe is leaning heavily toward the window, but gives the effect that it is trying to climb out of its pot. It’s giving strong Audrey 2 vibes, honestly. There are also approximately a million baby aloe plants crowding the pot. I should repot them, but I don’t really want a million aloe plants. I never intended to become an aloe farmer? Help…

As promised, here is a photo of the scarf all laid out, with an added close up of the pattern.
The scarf is laid out on a hardwood floor. It’s shaped roughly like a thick eyebrow, with the fringe along the top edge. The main part of the scarf is a burnt-orangey colour. And the trim and fringe are maroon. It’s about a foot wide in the middle (not including fringe) and tapers to a point at either end. A close-up of the scarf to show the crochet pattern I’m replicating. It’s essentially blocks of (dc2tog, picot, dc2tog) joined by various chains. (This picture is actually upside down, crochet-wise.) The trim seems to be much denser dc stitches, but I haven’t got to that bit yet in my reverse engineering.

I bought a scarf, years ago, that I LOVE (pictured below). It's clearly been crocheted, and every time I make a shawl I'm secretly hoping it will turn out like this scarf.

This has never happened.

But I was so inspired by the One of a Kind show, I finally sat down to reverse engineer the thing. 🧶
A crocheted scarf with a loose "weave" (i.e. lots of big, deliberate holes in the pattern). It's a burnt-orangey colour with maroon trim and tassels. It's about a foot wide (excluding tassels) and tapers to a point at either end. It is wrapped around a cream lampshade to show it off, as though the shade is a mannequin, because that was all I had in the house.

Square 2 of 12 is complete! Only one month this time instead of two. The last ten rounds annoy me so much I end up avoiding them - it shouldn’t actually take anywhere near this long. I swear I’m going to rewrite the pattern as I go for round three so I can finish the blanket without going insane. 🧶

Me, aged 3 (I think?), in my Halloween costume. I’m dressed as a witch in a black cape with silver trim, tied with a silver drawstring at my neck. And a black pointed hat with a black ruffled brim. Three-year-old me has olive skin, big brown eyes and shoulder-length curly light brown hair. I also seem to be wearing makeup.
