Roman gravestone of an optio, name unknown.
An optio was second in command to a centurion, commander of a century.
1st C AD. From Roman Bath.
The optio was in charge of communications. He carries a scroll and his official staff.

Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive – it’s such an interesting world. It wouldn’t be half so interesting if we know all about everything, would it?

I should’ve left it at that. Afterall, Lauren had admitted the lie, and it’s sad that her #options had narrowed to pretending she’d a fiancé. But I couldn’t leave it.

‘May as well take it off, as it’s clearly fake.’

Her face flushed, ‘It’s my mother’s.’

There was nothing to say to that.

Later, Lauren’s sigh interrupted the steady tapping of the keyboard.
‘What’s up?’ I asked.
She shrugged. Then words tumbled out of her mouth, ‘You see, in all likelihood, we’ll never be that happy. #Reality is why I make things up, wear this thing.’
The cold gems gleamed on her raised hand.
#vss365
‘If you haven’t got a #goal, you’re as good as dead,’ Lauren said.
She twirled the glittering band on her finger, the complicit diamonds sparkling in the strip light above our desks.
‘Still single then,’ I said, opening the next email in the queue.
‘I’m not.’
The lie sat silent between us.

And this morning we have a dusting of snow and it’s glistening in sunshine. It’s still around zero Celsius or just below. ❄️ 🥶

We were told there’d be #snowfall, well maybe, the first dusting of #Winter.

Well it’s been cold, sleety, grey, dank.

So to make up for it, here’s snowy days from years gone by.

The river Tay meets the sea at Dundee. On the opposite bank to the south is Fife. This was home for a decade. I still miss living by the water, and the people who made us welcome. Doesn’t matter that we made #Northumberland home and fifteen years have sped by.

That morning, Barates stood on the public practice area of Corcyra’s palaestra with Leo and Hairan. Leo had issued them with heavy wooden swords.

Hairan was swinging his, cutting the air, warming up.

It had been a year since Barates had felt the heft of a sword in his hand.
