Ever wondered how children who are hard of hearing feel about learning mathematics? In my recent paper, I found that attitudes are influenced not only by interest or ability, but also by teacher and peer support, and inclusive and accessible practices.

The latest issue of the Mathematics Education Research Journal is now available, featuring an article written by me. In this article, I explore how the use of manipulatives influences attitudes towards mathematics.

The confluence of attitudes towards mathematics and pedagogical practice: evaluating the use of mathematical manipulatives - Mathematics Education Research Journal
The use of manipulatives to develop conceptual understanding is a prevalent practice in many mathematical learning experiences, particularly in the early years of schooling. From primary student persp...

Love how this book “I am this big” by Janeen Brian and Jess Racklyeft explores the attribute of length through a child noticing how big they in relation to other objects. #mathsthroughstories #iteachmath #mtbos

I’m also thinking about optimisation and learning and teaching. If every moment is carefully scripted, then where is the space for making connections, for trying things out inspired by your curiosity, for pausing to take in the awesomeness of what you’ve made? All of these are part of learning too.
This from @brianklaas.bsky.social spoke deeply to me. I struggle with the guilt associated with not using every moment to make progress and it’s not healthy.
So much of our modern world tells you that you’re a failure if you don’t optimise everything. But, as I explain here, that’s not just the pathway to a miserable life; it’s also a surefire way to destroy resilience and create catastrophe, from individual lives to complex social systems.

I’m loving how the details of this cross stitch are emerging with every stitch. Design is ‘Grand Old Victorian’ by Ginger Gouger Miller. The grey is the same colour throughout. Up close, I don’t notice how the different type of stitches contribute to the design. A bit like maths, sometimes you tbc

This article by Skemp written in 1983 & reproduced in @atmmathematics.bsky.social MT journal 293 is still extremely pertinent: “if we were to teach music the way we teach maths we would only succeed in putting most of them off for life.” >>

I’m curious how people think about this…

Here are two different sequences of transformations applied to the picture below:

1. Rotate 90, translate (100,100)
2. Translate (100,00), rotate 90

Do they produce the same result? Why or why not? #iteachmath

Currently developing some course materials and adding Alt Text to the images that I have used. In writing the alt text I have made some noticing and wonderings.
How descriptive should the alt text be?

"What educator David Page said many years ago about math is true across the disciplines: When kids give the wrong answer, they're often just answering a different question. And our challenge is to figure out what that question is."

In other words, to assume that even older kids can’t - or shouldn’t - participate in formulating their own questions, or help to design their own investigations, speaks not only to one's view of learning but to one's view of the learners.
