"This is a critical moment for the UK, a time for deep reflection on what kind of country we are, and what kind of country we want to be"

The response to Lam's comments should be a swift, decisive and clear rejection of them ..... this is not that

The watered-down version of the Bill will still negatively affect many with disabilities and long term health conditions. The government should scrap it.

Pitting one group against another... in the spending cuts olympics.

Here the two-child limit. See also the ideas floated on cutting spending on education and health care plans for children with special educational needs.

Why can't politics be based on rights rather than a race to the bottom?
Note No.10 is starting work on its new narrative: “We can’t stop the two child limit ‘cos they made us u-turn on disability benefits.”

Child poverty v disability poverty is not a contest. Labour is responsible for its choices and solutions - not disabled people. www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...
Plan to scrap two-child benefit cap ‘dead’ after welfare retreat
A calamitous week for Keir Starmer’s government is said to have rendered the proposal, which would have cost £3.4 billion, unfeasible

Version of the classic 1936 poster. "Aixafem el feixisme" (Let’s crush fascism) by Pere Català i Pic. This one also reads "No to fascism. Neither on the streets, nor in the town halls." From the 2023 Catalan municipal elections. Damn, this is an image for our times...

The right to an adequate standard of living is a human right under international human rights law. As is the right to social security. The UK ratified a treaty promising to uphold these rights in 1976, almost 50 years ago. And yet here we are.

She could have not gone. Or paid for tickets but then accepted seating in a box for security reasons. There were other choices. “The right thing to do” may need more thought. Esp. in a context when you oversee policy that leaves people “choosing” between turning on the lights & feeding their kids…..

This. The incoherence of policy making is hard to comprehend.
29% of the people we help with PIP @citizensadvice.bsky.social have dependent children. Cutting disability benefits won't just affect disabled adults - it harms their children too. Hard to see how this fits into gov ambitions on reducing child poverty
The more we look at cuts to disability benefits and how they will affect the people we support at Citizens Advice, the clearer the impact on children in, and on the edge of poverty, becomes.

Cuts and caps to benefits have always harmed people, not helped them into work
Many of the measures already implemented to reduce government spending have actually pushed people further away from the labour market.

Labour MPs saying “the clue is in the name” to justify benefit cuts is wildly disingenuous. It co-opts Labour’s history to imply all those that cannot physically labour are somehow excluded from the cause. Being pro-worker does not require being anti-unemployed or anti-disabled. It never did.
