I believe it was Dostoyevsky who said “Later, Fucker”.

Irish abroad in Seattle. Longtime appreciator of quality nonsense.
I can see it. Congrats!

I would like to invite everyone here to enjoy the tagline of this book as much as I did.

Embassytown was another miss for me. I lost interest towards the end. The writing was great as usual and it had many similar themes as other Mieville books - relationships, empire, crisis. It was just hard to resonate with most of it. The plot devices were awkward at times. The ending was twee.

Iron Council was a miss for me. The writing was great as usual but he attempted too much and landed only some of it. The Iron Council, Tesh war and New Crobuzon plots could have been books in their own right. Instead they build and build and then just vanish.

Time for something new.

The Scar was brilliant. Highly recommended. The intrigue never lets up and the cast of characters are extremely memorable. Just like New Crobuzon, the city of Armada is not just a backdrop but a part of the story itself. Having read Perdido first definitely helped get into this too. Lovely stuff.

Perdido Street Station was an absolute adventure. My first take was that I wasn’t going to gel with the book but it defied classification and turned into something great. The city of New Crobuzon really felt like a part of the story, not just a backdrop. Really enjoyable if you can get in to it.

The City and the City was great. A mind-bending concept (that falters on close inspection) with a shade of cultural relevancy. The last third of the book didn’t really come together (imo) and the whole thing ended up a lot smaller than I thought it was going to but very interesting none the less.

Lovely bit of drama in the skies over Seattle this evening. This is from Shilshole looking towards Bainbridge.

Just finished watching Scavenger’s Reign. What an amazing amazing show. I’ve never seen anything quite like it before. Highly recommended if it even remotely seems like your jam.
