The book I pray from was grown from your light. Psalms on palm leaves progressing to wood. Inks dried in paltry rays through slatted window filaments. I breathed in sawdust like it was the cosmos, my viscera fast becoming pulp. Indelible testaments stained on the thoroughfare of my bones. Interspersed thermal pulse. I never did fully taste the flesh of summer. Dog-eared and toothless. Bed bound with scored spine. I sacrifice my biological processes to sate you, for you pay me back in ephemeral gold. Singing in silence for your return. The eyeless monk. Spilling more blood if I must. Outside, you shine, but inside the cannibal tends to itself. Life collapses and my pages burn. All suns must kill their darlings.

Concrete floors and walls with a faint moisture crowd Trigger in. With his arm extended upwards he can place his palm flat on the ceiling, feeling the weight of a planet pressing down on that one spot. Moving on from the last lift, the walkway curves into tiles which might have been white once but now have the queasy grey of preserved brain matter. Though the place has a dirty, disused character it smells clinical: saline and ether. Empty labs gape at Trigger, toothless mouths. A sign saying ‘Interdisciplinary Division Kryptos’ marks his way. Beside Trigger the wall gives way to perspex. A concrete vista rears up on the other side below him, a self-contained titan of metal and ground-up stone. This was once some manner of reactor but the seats by the console lie empty. Above, the ceiling stretches up to a cold, grey climax. After the pressure of the corridors before, the expanse is wide as a cathedral.
