15k edited. Hoping to make a lot of progress this (long) weekend.
I came to through a tunnel of awareness. First: that I wasn’t kneeling anymore, but flat on my back. Second: that the ground was rumbling beneath me. Third: that I was making a high-pitched keening noise. “Can you stop that,” snapped a familiar voice. All at once, the tunnel of awareness abruptly ended, catapulting me into a field of understanding. Or a tree, maybe. Excuse my mangled metaphors, I was waking from another fucking faint. Tree or field, I was in the back of a moving car, deposited like a bag of flour so that my neck and my legs hurt.

This has been a month of Stress at dayjob, but getting to take both kids biking sure does make me feel better.
A sunny day with a brilliant blue sky. Three bikes are parked in a semicircle. The leftmost is a kid's pink bike; the middle is a blue Elsa bike with training wheels and a seat on the handlebars (there is a yellow bunny stuffy in the seat); and the rightmost is an adult bike.

10k edited. I did finally hit the "wow this is horrible, I should yeet this into the sun" stage, so everything's going as it should.
We kept to ourselves, which I liked very much. Sometimes the girl at the end of the lane brought me eggs from her chickens; sometimes I’d eat the foxes that harassed her hens. We did what we could for each other.

5k in! Still love this WIP. What is wrong with me.
In this snippet, we focus on the truly scary:
“I’m fine.” “You just said you were feeling sick.” I held up my hands. “And it’ll pass soon. I just need to lie down for a bit. I don’t need a hospital bill I can’t pay when all I did was faint. I do that sometimes.” The partner softened slightly when I mentioned hospital bill. One thing we all had in common, I guess: fear of exorbitant medical bills we couldn’t pay.

The hotel was a sore thumb in the downtown district, a new construction that had gone up quickly and now soared several stories above the other, older buildings. While it looked as solid as everything else, I’d seen its wooden skeleton while it was being built. I could only hope it was otherwise up to fire code. We hesitated outside the automatic glass doors that led into the lobby, playing spot the invitation. Sunny saw one first, a “welcome to our worldclass hotels” on the lobby desk. She gave us a thumb’s up and we sauntered inside without a puff of resistance. God, I loved hotels.

I’m sure you have very secure passwords, but if you reuse them and our friend had access to your room during your transition period, it would be a piece of cake to cycle through them until she logged into your account.” “What does that mean?” asked Kevin. “You weren’t hacked, honey,” drawled Sunny. “You’re just bad at cybersecurity.” Kevin looked miserable. I patted him reassuringly on the back. “It’s okay. I mean, it’s not, because now the whole of Sparkle Net has been invited to our town and, while I’m sure most of them know better, I’m equally sure a non-token amount don’t, but… where was I going with that?” “You were trying to reassure me,” said Kevin glumly. “Oh right.” I patted him again. “At least you can change your password now to something she won’t know.”

Beautiful at sunrise and sunset, sure. Right now, though, it was just a dark building with nowhere to hide. “Heather?” I called, even though there was no way she was here. I walked down the center aisle, my boots clicking on the tile. I reached the stage and turned around—and nearly leaped out of my own skin. Heather sat in the foremost pew, legs crossed and head angled back to watch me. She wore the same jeans and shirt she’d had on earlier in the night, although now they had a number of new dark stains. Her straight black hair was clumped in places, as if it, too, had gone through the mud. Or an awful lot of blood. As if I’d been unsure about the origins of all those stains, Heather lifted a hand toward me and dried blood clearly visible around and under her fingernails. She waved.
