Architect, planner, and Executive Director of Environmental Works Community Design Center in Seattle. Adjunct faculty at UW. Also: cheese, parrots, travel, music, housing, transit, maps, books, dogs, politics.
Teenagers: old enough that they no longer demand a FaceTime “tour” of every work trip’s hotel room, but still insistent on “putting the dog on” when I call home.

Got this beautiful Jonathan Kozol quote in an email footer from one of my kids' teachers, and I'm sitting with it and my gratutitude that smart, committed, inspired people choose other professions--like middle school teacher-- that intersect my life.
We are so blessed.

If you don't have undergraduate students in your inbox explaining why they are missing class, where are you getting your graphic descriptions of life for the day?

State Senator Emily Alvarado just spoke to the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance annual meeting and observed that if Washington just adopted the average tax scheme of some other average state, we'd have around $300 million in extra revenue beyond what we have today.

I’m at the Washington Low Income Housing Association’s annual meeting, and they just shared the good news that all legislators statewide who voted for last year’s rent stabilization bill won their re-elections this month!

In a student presentation this morning about the history of farm worker housing in Washington state, they conducted a Kahoot quiz. I came in 3rd, which actually seems ideal to establish myself as holding sufficient expertise to teach but still being a sponge for learning!

I’m sure it’s not scientifically calibrated, but Armstrong (the people who make dropped acoustical ceiling tiles) has a free Armstrong Sound Level app that we use to settle lots of little family debates about sounds in the world.

🇳🇿 It’s New Zealand night, baby! 🇳🇿

We made:
🥧 Meat and cheese pies (with Impossible meat);
🌽 Keri Keri, a corn salad;
🐟 Ike Mata, a Māori dish of cured raw fish—like ceviche; and
🎂 a Pavlova.

It’s subtle, but I made the slits in the top of my pie in the shape of New Zealand!

Last night was a celebration of the 30th birthday of the Communties, Environment, and Planning major at UW. I’ve been teaching adjunct in this program for 6 years, and it was a blast to see many former students and older alumni. CEP builds such a powerful community each year. Long live CEP!

Bitterballen (vegan, made out of eggplant and mushrooms) and mustard sauce (not vegan, made with butter, cream, and shallot).

I think they still do…for some of their shows. Which makes it sound like the decision lies with the artist, right?

Even for the corporatist @seattletimes.com, this paragraph from their profile of Katie Wilson is appallingly classist.

I already supported @wilsonforseattle.bsky.social for Mayor *and* I’m more impressed by her lived small apartment experience, which will help our city solve its housing challenge.

$40k, for real? I know our salary range is out of whack and our housing costs are embarrassing, but the low end of this advertised job equates to $106k annually:

About last night:

@ronnychieng.bsky.social and @hasanminhaj.com have a lot of insight about race and immigration in America, disguised as a comedy bit. Was glad to see it live.

Also, I’d never been to the 5th Avenue Theater before, and it’s gorgeous.

We’re now hearing from Christian Joose in Columbus about how Black woman can take control of design their careers.
