Hi BlueSky! I'm João, a bioinformatician based in Brazil.

I'm working primarily with host-associated microbiome data and a lot of Nextflow.

I enjoy talking about software development in academia (and how to best support it!), open source software, and, ofc, metagenomics.

I'm happy to see that this collaboration with @juliaapolonio.bsky.social, which is part of her MSc's work, is finally out! Check out the paper if you're interested in conducting post-GWAS analyses with QTL data.

Excited to announce our first interactive article on sandbox.bio, about genomic ranges: sandbox.bio/concepts/gen...

Move & resize the ranges to see how that affects bedtools operations like merge and intersect in real time!

How about a beautiful image from the Biodiversity Heritage Library every time you open a new tab?

This is what this new FOSS add-on enables. Available for Firefox and Chrome:

Please help me share it with the world!

Thanks! Having Marcel as one of the examiners in my viva was instrumental to not only improving the written work, but also the software itself. Really glad he could follow the progress of this work throughout my MSc.
After @jvfe.bsky.social's viva last week, with @nextflow.io front and center—just like the satisfaction of the examiners in acknowledging how far João Vitor has come on his journey. Congratulations, João!

Your semi annual reminder that Silva does not curate species and therefore you should consider the use of species labels from Silva *very* carefully.
As in, dont do it.
Species in Silva are the rubber chocolate of taxonomic assignments. They look real, but they're not and will taste terrible.

Christmas time is upon us 🎄🎅! What better way to count down the days till Christmas eve than with an Advent calender?

I am one day late, but here is little Nextflow advent calender I made for everyone. Check back every day at midnight EST to open a new door:

Very good blog post that highlights software dev skills you can acquire by developing Nextflow pipelines! I can attest to the same things discussed in the post - Nextflow really helped me better grasp key concepts like containerization and HPC schedulers.
🚀 How Nextflow builds key software development skills for bioinformaticians!

In our latest blog post, Nextflow Ambassador Simon Murray shares how Nextflow helped him progress from Apprentice to Bioinformatics Engineer—and how it can help you too! 🧵

Really nice (and short!) paper that gives a good overview of the study of Y. pestis spread and plague pandemics using ancient DNA: doi.org/10.1016/j.ti....
It has a good set of references as well if you're like me and want to read more on the subject.
