Canadian by choice.📍Halifax. International in outlook. Leftie. Foodie. Queer. Multilingual. Bike person, but pedestrian at heart. Social scientist by trade. Household = me, Partner, two cats. Embracer of reality in an anti-reality world since early 2022.
I share both of those sentiments!

I mask around my parents too, no exceptions. It’s the only thing that makes sense given the circumstances.

*imagining you throwing them out the window of your house*

I know soooo many people who have gotten COVID at weddings.

I have pretty profound hearing loss, so I have a lot of sympathy for people not being able to hear well! But a) hearing aids exist, and are a godsend, and b) if they react badly rather than with gratitude when I enunciate, I know it wasn't about hearing.

I have an Envo too, but I haven't worn it in a long time. I bought one of the very first ones (I know there are newer ones). That seal is so comfy! But you're right, it's not super attractive.

If anyone ever fails to hear me through my mask, I repeat what I said VERY LOUDLY and e-nun-ci-ate ve-ry care-full-y. 😆

Talking about it behind your back instead of saying something to your face is consistent with the reluctance to say anything to you!

School street on MORRIS.

Yeah, I've (and Partner also has) found that acquaintances are less completely reluctant to say something, but still pretty unlikely.

Interesting! I don’t get it in healthcare either. No matter what the healthcare provider is wearing or not wearing.
November 28, 2025 at 12:10 PM
Yeah, my friends and acquaintances don’t say anything here either. It’s such a big change from Edmonton, where “now that’s a cool mask!” was pretty common. Like I said, though, I mostly like it.

It’s because you don’t count as a stranger to them, I suspect. People (even assholes) are EXTRA unwilling to comment if you’re a stranger.

Victoria was our other realistic option, Partner’s-work-wise. 😭

I have no regrets, though. We would have ended up in a much crappier house/apartment if we’d moved there, given our location limitations.

It’s just darrrrk

I had takeout lunch outside in a park! It was fantastic! November f’ing 27th!

Pretty clear who counts as "people" in their book (and who doesn't)
November 27, 2025 at 6:54 PM
This sort of lazy ignorance just makes me take them so much less seriously in other areas too. It’s gotten to the point that there are precious few journalists I don’t automatically second-guess.

Not quite as outright complimentary, but much funnier: in a laundromat in the Netherlands years later, I helped a German who didn’t speak Dutch figure out the machines. After I helped him, he said: “Your German is so much better than any other Dutch people I’ve met!” 😆

I’m SO USED TO jumping through hoops to end up on the other side that I hope I remember!
November 27, 2025 at 1:36 PM
Right? And I get why they waited, too--no one could predict at the beginning of this exactly how long the policy would remain in place.
