Edmonton, last winter (I think February).

For much of the year, the average temperature is actually about the same in the last place I lived and the current place I live, despite Edmonton’s reputation for somehow being frozen year-round. At this time of year, however, NOT SO MUCH. 😬

Update: this was scouted out for me in advance by @alisonburnis.bsky.social’s partner, so I didn’t have to worry, but to update everyone else: there is excellent bike parking at a rack INSIDE the building itself!

First photo: the Halifax establishment dubbed "IPA House".

Second photo: the Halifax establishment that I will forever call "IPA House" in my own little head. 😆

(Possibly a joke that only the Pheever will get, but I had to put it out there anyway.)

The waterfront is hopping for the Evergreen Festival, but the water itself is so calm!

For reference:

Picture 1: pannenkoeken (it's more or less a crepe-style pancake, but eaten almost like a pizza--though with a fork--with toppings on top)
Picture 2: poffertjes

Ah yes, that traditional Canadian delicacy: the stroopwafel. 😆

Update: I may have gone a bit overboard. 😆

Update: my wayward mitten has been soaked and stain-sticked and washed four times now. How obvious is it which one got run over by regular traffic on Windsor for about 24 hours?

Last big tomato picked from the garden (because the garden got put to bed today)…on November 12th! 😳

I used the prematurely-picked green peppers in recipes, and the smallest ones became "bite-sized" stuffed peppers! Worked nicely.

Update: we still haven't had a hard frost in our little backyard microclimate, but it's coming, so the harvest continues. Last night I picked all the remaining herbs and brought them in for dehydrating (besides the Italian parsley, which I left--dried Italian parsley is boring!).

Lost a mitt taking one bike to Halifax Cycles yesterday. Retrieved it today taking another bike in. What are the chances? 😄

Perfect night for a fire in the pellet stove!
November 6, 2025 at 8:57 PM
Well, that was seriously no fun at all! At least it gave me an opportunity to try out the gaiters I bought last year and never needed to use (see “fair-weather cyclist” above). 😆

Okay, I’ve been convinced to pick all my unripe peppers and most of my unripe tomatoes, sigh. (I’ve left some of the puniest tomatoes that will still make good use of the rest of the season should I get a few more days!)

It’s been a good first run—I’ve learned so much! Thanks for everyone’s advice.
November 2, 2025 at 10:53 PM
Okay, it’s done. Realistically they weren’t going to get any more ripe anyway.

I am actually reading the “Curbing Traffic” book for the first time, but this paragraph feels like a more articulate version of what I say on here every time someone talks about “enforcement” as a solution to traffic woes.

Two of our neighbourhood raccoons were on the roof of our dining room last night (one of them was caught on camera). Interesting coincidence.

Looking on the bright side: this is the description of this year’s birthday cake! I’m a little uncertain about the brownie layer, but the rest sounds weird in the most delicious way.

Wearing this throwback of a sweatshirt today in solidarity.

It’s not very pretty, but apart from the somewhat uneven crust, it looks right! I was astonished that it came out of the pan so easily!
