How hard it would it be to establish a clarifying lexicon that gets at this problem? I get that very powerful interests value the ambiguity, but still, can we really not make it happen? It'd be, what, a 5-item glossary?

I mean, if you *really* want to get to know someone

I remember years ago doing volunteer free tax prep and wow do you learn big things fast when you see what people need to indicate on such forms

Looking forward to the next generation of NYT Games including "can you tell?" a game in which you need to determine which story is news and which is paid advertising. Winners get signed up automatically for marketing emails from wirecutter.

I mentioned this to someone the other day, along with the similar move from Jakarta. They (1) had heard nothing about it, and (2) were both floored and curious. Helped that I knew the populations of each city.

But maybe I just don't grasp would-be readers' disinterest in this story.

"Can you pay me for the work?"

"Well, yes... if you'll accept Glory as compensation."

Amazing stuff! (Who publishes that atlas?)

I especially love how spot-on this little snip is.

I got through it eventually, but I was confused for moment by Paul Giamatti voicing John Adams but Laura Linney not voicing Abigail Adams (who she played, across from Giamatti, in the John Adams mini-series).

It's great.

But I really want him to take 30-45 seconds to explain that everyone in the colonies who shipped anything directly to/from the Caribbean without routing the cargo thru Britain was a "smuggler"

Truly a masterful deployment of this meme.

I'm not sure it can be topped.

We might need to retire the meme.

A Zen koan for the early climate change era:

Is it awareness if it's blinkered?

Is it your impression, Jeff, that any state and local government leaders have an idea of what's coming? Like, have they read Cadillac Desert or the Water Knife?

Is this as big a deal as my not-very-informed intuition tells me it is? Or is it just a modestly big deal. A meaningful small deal, perhaps?

Some years back I dropped the signoff from emails. It was like putting down a small but annoying burden and life has felt slightly lighter ever since.

Who is working on drafting the sheaf of Reconstruction Documents we're going to need? Impeachments, legislation interpreting strictly the emoluments clause, roadmaps to an expanded Court, etc etc.
