An American Tree Sparrow took a bath in a puddle on top of my wood pile last week. 🙂 (Not this week, though; there is ice and snow there now.)

Saw this animal & wondered what it was! Clearly a chipmunk, but not the Eastern Chipmunk I’m used to. It’s smaller & has very closely spaced stripes on its head & back. Turns out it’s a Least Chipmunk. A species I didn’t know existed, let alone that it’s found in NE Minn.

A great opportunity to see what the underside of an Evening Grosbeak’s wing looks like.
Out of focus bird viewed from below as it starts to fly away from a wooden feeder. The bird’s belly is yellow, underside of the wing is grey and white, and bill is off-white.

It’s 1:00 am and the sky seems unnaturally bright. Partly because it’s midsummer and partly because the northern lights are covering the whole sky! In the first photo you can just barely see the (normally bright) stars of the Big Dipper. #auroraborealis #minnesota #nature

There are hundreds of dragonflies in my yard, especially this species: Chalk-fronted Corporal (Ladona julia).

Medium-sized (about 50 mm) dragonfly perched on a reddish rhyolite landscaping rock. The dragonfly color is brown with white on thorax and upper abdomen. Clear wings.

Small brownish bird with a white upturned tail and a yellow bill swimming in shallow water. There are short, dead reed stalks sticking up out of the water. The water is calm, and ripples from the bird’s motion can be seen.

Snowmelt pond on my property in mist and rain on Monday, April 28th. There were about 20 mallard ducks back there, quacking up a storm. The frogs should start calling any minute now.

Road trip to Thunder Bay. Bought a very nice wool sweater at Warmth and Weather. Great place! Highly recommend. I like to support small local businesses wherever I am. Stopped at the Neebing Roadhouse for a burger on the way home.

A bobcat was hunting in my yard yesterday. It came up to the kitchen sliding glass door and went face to face with my pet cat, Aurora. (Aurora was not amused, and tried to attack by jumping up and hitting her paws against the glass.)

A bobcat hunting in my yard this morning. It saw my cat at the kitchen sliding glass door and came to investigate. My cat didn't take kindly to that and attacked as best she could. (Of course the glass prevented direct contact.) The bobcat ran off.

I looked out my kitchen door straight into the eyes of a Lynx! It hung around for 2 hours doing all the things cats do: stalking prey, grooming its fur, taking a nap, stretching... Then it walked away, using its big feet to stay on top of the snow.
