We can polish President Obama’s legacy. We need to claim a state of hope and change for the future.

We deserve to build vibrant diverse communities. We need to heal the festering wounds that make us feel divided from the best in ourselves.

Right now, especially on October 18th, we need to speak up and claim what we expect from our leaders by first naming the injustices we will not tolerate.

We know now that we don’t want to be governed by those small-minded, inhumane people. We want to care for our children, elderly, and vulnerable neighbors. We expect equity and justice to be enacted. We expect to have autonomy over our private lives and our bodies.

That ugliness is exposed & the gore is disturbing. I know you’ve watched the videos. A minority is trying to exploit us. Their cruelty is the point.

But we are rising up, linking elbows with good people who we didn’t quite understand before, & we are telling vulnerable people we have their backs.

For the majority of the people in the US, our values haven’t changed but we needed to look more closely. We needed to clarify that we don’t want the inhumanity of racism & bigotry for our vision of a global society.

It has taken me over 8 years to realize my answer. The Obamas’ legacy is not tarnished. It just unearthed areas in which our country was not prospering, ways we needed to dig deeper so we can heal the racism, homophobia, xenophobia, misogyny, and ableism.

Do any of you replay the supposed insults in your mind and wonder why those responses aren’t easier in the moment? Please tell me how you’ve said exactly the right thing when someone tried to make you feel stupid about protesting against injustice. I’m better when I hear examples.

And there was one time I sang and a woman tried to insult me by asking why I sang like a Black person. It took me a while to realize that it was her intent that hurt, not the words she said.

Why was that line an insult to our taking a stand to follow due process and the Constitution? It’s like the right calling us woke as an insult. I want to be woke.

So, he’s saying that a President who is suppressing information about his involvement in sex trafficking and the rape of children is not an issue for our country. Why is he even talking if he has no understanding of the law and ethics regarding the rights of children?
