A photograph taken on a small cruise ship. It’s landscape oriented and taken pre sunrise after light drizzle. I’m on the top deck towards the front of the boat looking back along its length, at the back of the boat are two large red funnels. The boat fills the right hand side of the frame and the sea fills the left on a diagonal from the bottom corner to two thirds up in the centre. The wet deck is a rich shiny orange colour and it is reflecting one of the red funnels. The top third of the image is sky, a beautifully gentle early morning sky of blue and slightly pink clouds.

A nighttime image of one of Venice’s many canals. The photograph is landscape oriented and filling the frame across the bottom is a canal, all around it are buildings. Directly ahead is a large building painted bright yellow and this is reflected in the canal. On the right the corner of a building holds the frame together. On the left is the path and moored alongside it is I a red, blue and white boat. The only other soul around is another photograph stood on the path near to the boat. He is small in the image, I did consider cropping him out but felt he added scale and interest so I left him in.

An archeological site in Kos Town. The image is landscape oriented. On the left the bottom third is old stones and an area of parched grass. In the right top two thirds are come trees and behind them building of the town some old, including a clock tower, and some new. On the top left two thirds is a white wall of a new building and on it, standing out in vivid blue and orange is a graffitied word. Apologies I don’t know what it says 😁

An autumnal landscape image taken at Howden Reservoir. Water levels are low and drop has revealed traces of the village that was flooded in order to create the reservoir. On the right is rocky foreshore with a small pier jutting to the left into the remaining water. At the far end of the shore old wooden post stand like a sculpture. Across the top third of the image is a tree lined hillside. The trees, mostly conifers, are various shades of yellow and green, these colours reflect in the water below the pier.

A portrait oriented image taken on the beach at St Bees in Cumbria. The beach, at low tide fills the bottom two thirds, with a shallow pool filling the frame across the bottom tapering as you go into the picture until it peters out about a third up. At its end is a sits a round rock. Beyond this rock the sea is lapping up onto the beach. The beach itself is sandy and the retreating tide has left beautiful ripples behind it. The top third is the early morning sky, light blue with a few dark clouds and the orange/yellow glow of the rising sun, which is reflected on the open sea.

A blue and misty morning on Derwent Water in the Lake District. The main subject is Derwent Isle, an island close to the boat launchs in Keswick, which is owned by the National Trust. It early in the morning and the sun has yet to rise to burn off the mist. The isle sits central in the image on the extremes either side of it are old wooden posts sticking up out of the lake. The water in front of the isle is calm with only a few ripples, the sky has some darker clouds that almost appear to be coming from the island and rising up into the sky. There are times when breaking the rule of thirds works and for me this one of them.

I enjoy photographing flower and almost always keep blooms as they begin to fade and die. Their beauty doesn’t diminish it simply changes. In this image I wanted to explore the relationship between these two flower heads and found them part way through a spontaneous dance reaching out to each other ready for the next lift or twirl. Placing them on a reflective surface added another dynamic. The flowers are cosmos from the garden 🌸

The wood is orange and even in the fading light gleams due to the layers of varnish protecting it from the water. The top third of the image is the far lake shore, mountain tops beyond and a wonderful orange and yellow sky.

Mirror like reflections early in the morning at Derwent Water in the Lake District. I’m standing in the lake in my wellies in order to have water right in front of me. The bottom third of the image is all reflection going up the image we have the lake shore then on the left a group of three trees that go up and out of the frame, they are very green. On the right is a larger group of smaller trees and in the centre peeping out around them is a tiny whitewashed cottage. Above these trees is the pine clad hillside, which like the trees on the left goes up and out of the frame.

A minimalist black and white of a single aster bloom. The flower is central in the image and we’re looking at it sideways on. It’s edited quite high key and the depth of field is shallow to deliberately soften the edges.

A woodland scene that is divided almost diagonally from left to right. The bottom divide is a carpet of orange fallen leaves. The top is the trees from which the leaves have fallen. There are still plenty of leaves on the trees and these are backlit by the sun. The sun is bursting through the branches in the top left with a perfect starburst. A path is leading us onwards through the trees.

The top two thirds are filled with wonderful deciduous trees just starting to get their autumn colour (sadly most of the leaves are gone now and with the stormy weekend we have forecast they’ll no doubt all be gone in a few days 🍁) towards the right hand side just above the lake is a clearing and in it stands a colonnaded folly / summer house.

A black and white landscape oriented image, which is almost split in two as it’s a scene with its reflection. The top half is a heavily tree lined foreshore, the trees are mainly conifers. Coming on from left and right in two sweeps that meet on the upper right third. The sky above them is dramatic with clouds. All of this then flipped on the bottom half as it’s reflected in the reservoir below, blurred slightly by ripping on the water.

A landscape oriented image taken in the wonderful botanical gardens in Funchal on the island of Madeira. It’s taken looking through the aquarium glass with a group of fish swimming more or less towards me. The majority of them are in the bottom half of the image with on larger one in the top left corner. Balancing the image is light coming in down the right side that is devoid of fish, the interest here is the ripples and light patterns.

A portrait image. The foreground is a bed of artichokes with a number in bloom and more following on. They lead us up to a hedge and trees, two trees one on either side of the image. There is a gap in the centre of the hedge and through it we see the tower of the stately house. The image is topped with a lovely sky, colourful clouds as it’s not long after sunrise and an early morning glow on the distant hills. The house is Chatsworth. This photo is from a wonderful year I spent recording the gardens there. It was a totally unique experience.

Across the bottom of the image are a large number of shrub roses happily blooming away. Above them coming in from the right is a beautiful old stone building with wonderful arched windows across its front facade and lovely stone detailing across the top. Off to the left we can just see the ornate roof of another building. It’s high summer and the sun is shining.

A close up encounter of decoration on Brighton Pier. It’s made up of rows of, what I can only describe as dog tag. They caught my eye as they were glinting beautifully in the sun and creating patterns with the various reflections within them.

Looming large in the foreground from the right side and running on into the image are large boulders all worn smooth by the sea. They are all sorts of colours red, yellow, blue, cream…… Above them are cliffs, they run on through the image and round into the headland.

Three conifers on the left and three deciduous on the right bedecked in orange and gold leaves. The floor is heavily scattered with leaves as autumn is fast coming to a close. I’ve titled the image The Alliance as the two types of trees are coming together across the path.

A very stripped back minimal image. A foggy morning with little visibility and I have focused in on a bed of reeds growing out of the edge of the tarn. They come in from the right hand side and work their way across the image reducing in number as they do so. Beyond them we can just make out the shape of shrubs on the far bank but no detail. Above the shrubs is nothing but fog. A perfect morning for me 😁

I love the details of flowers at all stages of their lives. This is a black and white photograph of a simple hydrangea as it turns to its skeletal form. All we see is the flower head on a white background making all the details pop.

Landscape oriented image. Down the entire left hand side of the image are the branches of a Japanese maple with vivid yellow and orange leaves as it displays its autumn colours. Along the bottom is a moss covered rock, there are more moss covered rocks central in the image. They are large rocks and feature mature trees that seem to be growing out of them. Other than the rocks the image is filled with trees. The acer and the two on the rocks are the subjects of the image.

Running from left to right is a weir, that works as a lead in line. There is a bridge crossing the river at the furthest point of it we see. Again coming in from the left are shops and houses with lights on in most of the windows. Almost central up in the night sky are the towers of the cathedral.

A landscape oriented black and white image. It’s taken in dense woodland that has a track running up through it. The track doubles back on itself as it rises through the wood my position is standing on the extreme outside of the bend so across the bottom third of the image the track looms large and retreats back into the scene on both sides. In the middle of the bend is a large redwood growing up and out of the image, as do the trees on the each side of the image.
