Viime aikoina on ollut taas puhetta "osallistavasta demokratiasta", mutta konkretia jää usein uupumaan. Osuustoiminnan kehittämisen mahdollisuuksista julkisen ja yksityisen sektorin välissä puhutaan vähän, vaikka tässähän sille välimallin demokraattiselle vaikuttamiselle on konkreettinen sija.

Learn to recognise and avoid these traps. Failure to avoid leads to numerous problems.

I remember all too little of the interviews I did with rock stars when I was briefly employed as the music critic for a national newspaper, but there is this.
26 years ago I was sent to a London pub by a newspaper to interview and drink whisky with Lemmy, who was in the band Motorhead and, before that, slightly less famously, Hawkwind and, before that, much less famously, Sam Gopal. We had a good chat: about being from the part of the Midlands north of the River Trent, about books, and about roadying for Hendrix in the mid-60s (him, not me; I was minus nine at the time). When the record company PR sidled over to tell me my time was up, Lemmy waved him away. “No, no, I’m enjoying this,” he said, commandingly. I realised at this point that I had another question I’d been meaning to ask but hadn’t. “Are you scared of anything?” I said to Lemmy. “Nothing,” he replied. Then he paused and frowned for a moment, as if an idea had suddenly occurred to him. “Oh, maybe snakes,” he said. “It’s because they’ve got no shoulders.”

This is from a satirical magazine written by Anthony Kenny and Julius Kovesi in Oxford, 1958-59. I have reviewed so many papers in the last 5 years that are basically just this.
If A Machine Tells You: 'l Shall Come Back To Finish Those Calculations For You', Then Goes Away And Does Not Return, Did It Break A Promise Or Did It Break Down? Report on Why? Competition-Problem No. 3 There were two entries to this competition. One, from Oxford, declared in verse Your alternatives offered are not An at all contradictory lot Nor are they contrary- \We urge you be wary: Your faithless machine just forgot! But does a machine really tell you anything?! Or, if a machine makes an utterance, is it an utterance or to be regarded as speech? If speech, is it supposed to be made directly by the machine or indirectly by its maker? If it is made indirectly by the maker (by pushing buttons, etc.) then it is not the speech (or utterance) of the machine bur the speech (not only utterance) of the maker. If so, he can't say the sentence in question( a) because he is not going anywhere, b) because if you promise yourself something, you can't use the second person ('l shall finish those calculations for you'), therefore the sentence should either be rephrased or abandoned as twice meaningless. Otherwise the problem depends on the relation between the above utterance and the Cogito. For only if the machine utters this proposition after declaring 'Sum ergo cogito' can it be meaningful speech. If the machine neglected first to establish its resemblance to the maker (see Gen. i.26 and other metaphysicians) then it is not an independent actor, ergo non cogitat et quod sequitur non loquitur either. These fundamentals established, the rest should be worked our by those concerned with moral technology. (Remark. If you are a philosopher, you had better nor mess about with machines any-how.)

An extremely short horror story I wrote, set in the future.
The year is 2034. 98% of the population of the planet is employed as a life coach. All the life coaches have life coaches. Life coaches decide to redouble their efforts, going in hard to all the last remaining outposts where people exist simply as people rather than life coaches or people striving to live their best life via life coaches. “Can I be your companion on your journey to yourself and give you the life advice that will make you a proper person?” ask the life coaches. “Can you get out of my kitchen, please?” say the people. “I’ve already had six of you in here this morning, trying to tell me how I can be the ultimate version of me and unlock my true potential. I never asked for this. I just want to be able to live my most average, flawed life in peace and finish cleaning the oven.”
