1/7 Humpback whale communication has human language features

They have studied the songs of humpback whales inspired by the way children segment communication. When studied from this perspective, it purely follows Zipf's law.

The chance of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting out planet in 2032 is now 1.5%, or 1 in 67.

The OVERWHELMING likelihood is that the asteroid will miss Earth.

But for the first time ever, we might have to seriously consider a deflection mission soon.

Let me explain. 🧵 (1/x)

A very fascinating paper went up on the arXiv today!

Jesse Han & El-Badry et al. reanalysed the 21 known 'hypervelocity' stars in the #milkyway.

They find strong evidence that the LMC (Large Milky/Magellanic Cloud) has a supermassive black hole at its core! 🤯 arxiv.org/abs/2502.00102

A nice article about how and why the Vera Rubin Observatory images will be released with some delay and its alerts pre-filtered to avoid leaking the position of spy satellites.
The system looks better than the one used in PanSTARRS. The black stripes were awful.

IMO, we have turned a scientific career into something incompatible with personal life, not only children, but also elderly parents, illnesses, etc.
Leave everything personal aside for an scientific 'excellence' which is measured by the number of papers and h-index.
Women in Academia — “The academic structure ... with its relentless relocations, temporary contracts, and focus on individual achievement, makes planning for a family feel like an impossible luxury.”
As women in academia, having children can feel impossible. Talking about it makes us feel less alone
The struggle is “balancing their careers not just with motherhood, but with what comes before: relationships and planning for a family,” these postdocs write
