UK govt won’t see progress on child poverty by 2029 even with high economic growth 📢

📊 Latest figures out from the ONS this morning showed that inflation slowed to 3.6%.

But food inflation rose to 4.9%, up from 4.5% in the previous month.

The outlook for around 7 million households going without essentials in the UK remains extremely stark.

No one in the UK should experience destitution - wherever they were born – and destitution should never be an acceptable outcome of policy. But some policies announced in the Home Secretary’s asylum statement risk increasing destitution. 🧵1/7 www.gov.uk/government/p...

Universal Credit was missing a crucial objective from its inception: to address poverty.

15 years on, it’s time we made Universal Credit the poverty-fighting system it could be, writes @iainkporter.bsky.social for @bigissue.com

📉 12 months of very low earnings growth, despite an uptick in September, is bad news for low-income families.

With inflation still above target, without real income growth families are likely to face increasing financial strain.
Slightly higher earnings growth in latest month of data means real earnings are up 0.4% on the year to Sept 25, equating to £2.20 a week, a huge contrast to the previous 12-month period where growth was more than 5 times higher at 2.4%, £11.60 after inflation.

📒 Government published Sir Charlie Mayfield's ‘Keep Britain Working’ report today.

An ambitious framework for how employers can support workers in ill-health.

Focus must be here to shift the dial on employment of disabled people & benefit spend, not cutting people's benefits. 🧵

We're proud to join @crisis-uk.bsky.social in their call for Local Housing Allowance to be unfrozen at the Budget.

❄️ LHA has been frozen since April 2024, heaping financial pressure on low-income renters in the private rented sector.
Abel’s experience is too common among the people we support.

He experienced homelessness for five months. Because housing benefit did not cover the cost of rent, he couldn’t find anywhere he could afford.

His message to the Chancellor: fix housing benefit on 26 November. [1/5]

Spoke to the BBC about the drivers of deprivation and the impact on families. There's a clear link between living in hardship & feeling socially/politically disconnected.

To make meaningful progress, communities must be involved in decisions affecting their lives.

Deprivation isn’t only a rural or coastal issue. Some larger cities - Manchester, Birmingham & London - see high levels of deprivation too - driven by high housing costs and high levels of insecure work and low pay.

Wherever you live should not affect your chances in life -but this is not the case.

Weak labour markets and low wages drive high deprivation in these areas.

While housing costs tend to be lower, the quality of housing can be much poorer.

🏠For example, 1 in 4 (25%) homes in Blackpool and 1 in 5 (21%) homes in Hastings are of poor quality.

🚨New deprivation data reveals continual deep regional divides across many areas in England.

High levels of deprivation are concentrated in many ex-industrial northern and midlands towns and coastal areas, where manufacturing and tourism industries have been lost.
