Yesterday in town I saw a sticker-covered VW van with a Lest We Forget thing near the bumper… and higher up, some other sticker featuring a prominent Iron Cross. Just about sums it up.

As a pretty reliable rule of the thumb, the more jingoistic, flagbashy and generally belligerent a veteran is, the less they actually did or saw in military service. That’s presuming they’re even actually a veteran.

In my army training, firearm safety was drilled into us for months, I think in part to stop us from seeing the weapons as cool or desirable. A rifle was a tool to do a job, an assembly of parts we had to meticulously take apart and clean incessantly. And we did. I can’t stand the sight of them now.
