Hello to recent new followers!

I guess I should give a brief introduction. I'm Josh and I've been working on the BBC's Design System team for over five years. My passion is CSS and I recently had the privilege of joining the CSSWG in the summer.

I hope to serve you all well. 🫡

There's a new #CSS Working Group poll to get feedback on different names for the infamous 'Pinterest' layout.

- Since it uses many of the grid-* properties, `grid` will be in the name somewhere
- We don't use metaphors in CSS names, so `masonry` is not listed here

Ex-Masonry Display Type Keyword Poll
See https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/12022 for context. This poll intentionally leaves out `masonry` as an option, see https://github.com/w3c/csswg-drafts/issues/12022#issuecomment-34172962...

If I seemed a bit quiet the last month, it's because I lost my grandma. We had the funeral on Wednesday.

I don't have a dad and it was both my mum and grandparents who I lived with and who raised me, growing up.

How I'd love to be that little boy again giving her a hug.

As an experiment, we (the Firefox team) wanted to try a new way to get feedback on which Interop proposals matter most.

So, here's a web app where you can rank the proposals you care about, giving us data we can use when reviewing which ones to champion.

A double focus ring is really useful in general but especially so with complex, themed systems. Eric Bailey shows us how to develop a really smart system, using modern CSS.

I got to speak at our internal BBC conference, today, about what I've been involved with in the CSSWG: the new meta tag for websites to opt-in to respecting the text size accessibility settings in iOS and Android.

I've created a proposal for a new CSS style query or pseudo-class that gets the current 'used color scheme'.

"But don't we already have @media (prefers-color-scheme)?"

Yes, but authors can override the color scheme and the media query can't know that.

🤩 View Transitions excitement!
View Transitions are enabled by default in Firefox Nightly, so they're on their way to stable. Give it a test with your current transitions, and give me a shout if anything doesn't look right.

Had a blast at #FrontEndNorth yesterday. A lovely, friendly crowd, the other speakers were interesting and the organisers planned a brilliant mix of thought-provoking, uplifting, and inspiring creative talks, with a good dose of silliness.

That's the end of #FrontEndNorth. Thanks to everyone in the team for putting on a fantastic event! We really appreciate you!! @frontendnorth.bsky.social

But anyway, our after party is at the national video game museum so smell you later!

Finally we end on @joehart.bsky.social who is part time developer, part time comedian. (And used to work at the BBC.)

And the start of the talk was slightly delayed because he was taking a photo of us and somehow incorporating it into the talk. #FrontEndNorth

Next is @craigabbott.co.uk talking about making user centred experiences to make them accessible.

The medical model of disability says oh a blind person can't go to the cinema because they can't see. The social model says they can't enjoy the cinema because they don't have AD. #FrontEndNorth

Next we have @whitep4nth3r.com who takes us back to a time when HTML 2.0 has just come out. Please wait while the dial up internet connects. @frontendnorth.bsky.social #FrontEndNorth

Next is @amyhupe.bsky.social who's currently working with us at the BBC. We love Amy so much!

Amy is talking about being inclusive by design. She's worked on providing a way of getting ID for people who don't have photo IDs like driving licenses, so that they can still interact with services that require identity verification. #FrontEndNorth @frontendnorth.bsky.social

This is the sort of layout that is possible when one combines @ichimnetz.com #CSS skills with @bell.bz cross-dominion communication skills.

Here's an example of a website. The lengths of the columns are seemingly random. But they roughly correspond to ratios. With CSS grid, we can very nicely recreate the layout, combining with fluid typography. And it's nicely responsive. #FrontEndNorth

Next is @olu.online talking about building a better web. @frontendnorth.bsky.social #FrontEndNorth

Olu says there are many webs out there and they are all part of the one web.
