Here’s a few thing the Home Secretary could do if she *actually* wanted to put asylum seekers on the same playing field as British citizens:
✅ give them the right to work from day 1
✅ give them access to the social security system not below-poverty-level asylum support

Remind me again what lessons were learned from Windrush?

These people were actively encouraged to come here to fill yawning voids in our care system. They’re generally in poorly paid, precarious jobs where exploitation is rife. Now theyre being punished AGAIN

Show me one piece of evidence that suggests that this is going to work - either to the number of people making dangerous journeys to get her OR to the Labour party’s political fortune.

Health care is just one sector out of many that could face crisis because of this government's ludicrous proposals to make permanent settlement harder (for some impossible) to get in the UK.

Why would ppl want to build a life here to be treated like this?

Can someone please explain this argument that digital ID cards will be “practically effective in the fight against illegal migration”? When we already have a hostile environment and migrants *already* have to prove their right to work, rent with a… digital visa

Do policy makers have any idea what their policies do to people’s lives?

Spouting about social cohesion while proposing to put millions more people into situations like Nish’s suggests… not?

When will Labour's leadership realise that minorities, immigrants and people on benefits ARE working-class people?

After they lose the next general election. That's when.

Despite the swirling awfulness of the welfare debate this week, I'm taking a small measure of comfort from this.

I have certainly been one to rail against justifying intl aid money because it “keeps us safer” because it has more value than this but… it *does* also keep us safer

Listening to an excellent training about the eVisa transition from @praxisprojects.bsky.social fabulous Bethan Lant. Struck again and again by how little the designers of this process have thought about the actual people who have to use it…
