perhaps i am overly charitable, but i think this is a way to be *skeptical* of an observation

I could be skeptical in either a dismissive or non-dismissive way, that just feels to me like a question of tone, rather than a substantial difference in argument/assumption

could they still be right?!

sure!

they *could* be right.

but noticing common factors that often lead people to be wrong, but confidently wrong, is a fine thing to do even without further evidence.

it's a good starting point, that good evidence can overcome!

"college professor is older than their students, the age gap widens every year" is not a leap.

neither is noticing that difference age cohorts know different things, have different cultural reference points, interact with technologies differently, are pre-occupied with different things, etc

"human beings have blindspots" is a perfectly reasonable starting point in almost any conversation like this
November 29, 2025 at 4:37 PM
when one particular person reports their experiences, noticing the qualities that might inform their perspective, and supposing that they *have* an individualized perspective... feels like table stakes.

assuming that people *might not understand this about their own perspectives* feels similar!
November 29, 2025 at 4:36 PM
nah, assuming that individuals have individual experiences, and having a baseline that those experiences may not be generalizeable... is not "an enormous conclusion"

its like a basic, relatively conservative assumption/heuristic about good ways to understand the world
November 29, 2025 at 4:34 PM
ahhh, I gotcha!

(I think we pretty much just agree about that)
