Can we separate art from the artist? I can, at least with this collection of short stories. It entered my life at a time when I was particularly into anthologies, and immediately became the standout.

My romance with weird fiction began in my mid-thirties, probably because of Zelazny. This might be my favorite book in the sword-and-sorcery genre: unlike most of his peers, CAS had a sharp sense of humor that blended well with the expected Lovecraftian purple prose. Very enjoyable.

Another teenage book. It initiated my lifelong romance with cyberpunk. It's certainly not high literature, but it helped me realize I didn't care that much about "height" when it came to books.

I think I gravitate towards books that have left me speechless when it comes to these lists, and the ending to this movie did. Dystopian sci-fi that was written either in 1931 or yesterday. Hard to tell, sometimes.

And what about that Red Hulk? Ha! Humor!

Yeah, yeah, yeah. "Men don't read any books after high school!" Well, I'll have you know that I first read this book in my thirties (it's not a high school book in Spain), and it brought tears to my eyes. So fuck you, hypothetical dumbass.

Yeah, okay, I'm going to be stereotypical. But it's one of the greatest books ever written, so bite me. Another book that’s been in my family for decades, the flagship of that overused "magical realism" genre. And no, I don't want to hear about any Netflix series: I pretend they don't exist.

I didn't read this fantasy novel until last year, and honestly, where had it been all my life?! A fantasy novel with something to say is such a rarity! It's a modern twist on weird fiction with a wonderfully developed world that will stay with me forever.

It's now a meme to mock McCarthy and his many stylistic tics, and I'll be okay with that once he gets that Nobel Prize he deserves. It's only fair!

Dark Americana: brutal, raw, and featuring what is possibly the most evil antagonist ever written. An unforgettable experience of a book.

Speaking of complex structures! I inherited this book from my mom. It’s another incredible piece of art that has ruined the minds of countless men; at least it’s done the same to just as many women, seeing themselves as La Maga. Bohemian exiles in Paris, and a tragedy waiting to happen.

This was not my first Bolaño; that would be Amuleto. However, this book completely shattered my 18-year-old mind. I didn’t get the critiques of the Spanish literary world, but the deliciously complex structure and the way he adapted his style to different POVs fucked me up. It's a masterpiece.
