Best thing the UK can do for global trade is maintain openness and focus on services strengths. Unfortunately that clashes with domestic politics with regard to immigration.

It's more about starting a negotiation with an anchoring bid, but yes, that dynamic is why the EU-UK relationship will continue to be very scratchy.

The potential benefits are more than 15 times lower than membership. So it is not a goer to demand a gross contribution four times lower than if the UK were a member.
